Crossover Failure

I cannot get my two computers to connect with a crossover cable.
PC1

Windows XP SP2
256MB RAM
nVIDIA TNT2 RIVA
RealTek 8139 onboard 10/100

For the other end:
Compaq Presario 2240
Windows 98 Gold
32MB Ram
PCI SMC EtherPower II 10/100
