cross-reference

Current document uses CHAPTER HEADING for each chapter. Within the document,
I need to cross-reference that CHAPTER HEADING. Problem is that none of the
CHAPTER HEADING(s) appear in the cross-reference list under Headings. Heading
1 and etc work, just the drop-down list does not show CHAPTER HEADINGs.Do not
know if the previous writer broke something or?

Hi Sherman -

Creating a style doesn't automatically make it a Heading style regardless of
what it's used for, and only Heading styles appear in the Cross Reference
list, as you found out.

Not knowing more about the specifics of the doc, it might be easiest to
Bookmark each Chapter Heading... especially if there aren't dozens of chapter
headings. The bookmarks will show up in the Cross Reference dialog list & you
can use them.

There wll most likely be other responses as well, so keep checking back.

PS- If you use my suggestion, do I get anything taken off my mortgage

Change the Chapter Heading style Outline Level to Level 1. It will then
appear in the list of cross-references. Look up Outline Level in the Word
Help for more information.

While this may be true on a Mac, I don't think it works in WinWord. The
built-in Title style has an outline level of 1, but it does not show up in
the cross-reference list for Headings. Only true built-in Heading styles are
shown. It is, however, true that any *numbered* heading (regardless of
outline level) will show up as a "Numbered item."

{Blush} Thanks, Suzanne... I just answered a question of Document Map, and
had Document Map on the brain.

Altering the Level property doesn't work for Heading cross references in ANY
version of Word -- my bad :)

Yes, Document Map (and Outline View?) would react favorably to a change in
outline level.
