Critical update will not install

My Windows XP Home edition computer will not install MS
critical update KB823182. The MS update site identified
this update and 2 others for my computer. None of the
three will install, but this one seems to be the only one
which is actually for XP Home edition. The other updates
were for NT or Win 64 bit edition.

Anyway, I'm confused. What do you do when a "Critical
Update" refuses to install?

What is it?

Download patch and install manually:

Download patch
Reboot
Disable all unnecessary applications including anti virus
Install patch
Reboot

The usual cause of this problem is a corrupt 'catroot2' file. Find the
file, rename it, reboot and try the update again. A new catroot2 file
will be generated.
