Critical Update - 9/03/03 and Services

R

Robert

Greetings:

After I installed the critical updates for Windows and
Office, I restarted the computer.

I also read a paper on disabling the Remote Procedure Call
RPC service for security purposes - and disabled it.

1)Unfortunately, I now can't re-enable the RPC service (but
I can start/restart others), nor can I view the properties
of other services.

2)Also, my Norton Antivirus became disabled.

3)I'm having difficulty using Internet Explorer (can't open
new pages, javascript seems disabled - I'm using Opera to
post this, since I can't do it in IE).

Is there a bug in the critical updates? If the RPC service
is the key, how can I enable it?

Thanks.

I sure would like to know where you got such a paper. RPC has to run in Windows NT4\2000\XP\2003. Without it you have no operating system.

I just reloaded my system because MS did not fully test the last round of
patches. This current round isn't worth the headache of crashing office or
another app.

If the original poster disabled the RPC service, that's what is causing his
problem, not the updates.
RPC is a required service, disabling it will make a machine almost useless.
Whoever told him to disable the RPC service for "security purposes"
needs to stop giving advice.

To the original poster, to reenable the RPC service, try these steps below.
(reposted from an earlier post by Jim Byrd)

"1. In the Registry navigate with Regedt to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services then find the sub-keys
for RPCLocator and RPCss for each of these, set the Start REG_DWORD
value to 2. OK out and re-boot. (If you didn't turn off RPCLocator, then
just leave it alone.)

2. If that doesn't work, then get to the Recovery Console and type the
command:
Enable RPCSS Service_Auto_Start

Then press the Enter key to submit the command. Then type: exit
and press Return to restart the computer.

3. If that doesn't fix it (because the Hardware Profile was disabled) then
try the following from Scattman (MS):

"If you disabled the hardware profile for RPCSS, you
cannot restart the service by just starting the service
from the command prompt, or setting the start registry
key to 2.

I have verified this works on several of my test machines:

If you can boot into Windows (regular or safe-mode), open
a command window (windows
key + r, type cmd.exe) and type the following text:

reg.exe delete "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware
Profiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\LEGACY
_RPCSS\0000"
/v CsConfigFlags

You may also be able to use the recovery console to edit
the above key manually.

Good luck!
-Scott [MS]"
