create .lnk to redirect?

I understand that .lnk files are "shortcuts" and another term may be
"links". In winxp pro/home, can the lnk be used for redirection as
in deleting the "my documents" folder and create a .lnk to another
folder in a different partition? Seems reasonable?

The thing is that so many software apps want to put their stuff into
drive c:, I would like to redirect the higher level folder to drive d:
which would have much more room. I haven't seen any references of
using lnk/shortcut to redirect in winxp as can be done with linux
and similar os.

I can only find that lnk & problems in google but not the creation
& usage of lnk to redirect files/folders. Can this be done in
winxp pro/home with any of the "system" folders/files?

Since My Documents is a Special folder, the mechanics of moving it are a bit
different than usual. Right click the My Documents desktop icon, left click
Properties, click the MOVE button, then navigate to the partition or drive
where you want My Documents moved to. Windows XP will automatically change
it's shortcuts for My Documents to reflect the new path.
