CRAZY XP installation problem

E

Emily Waugh

I posted a few weeks ago because I accidentally installed
XP on my computer in such a way as to create a partition;
I had Windows 98 on one side and XP on the other; neither
was functioning.
I removed my data from the computer and followed your
instructions to do a "clean install" of Windows XP
(professional) and remove the unneeded partition. I was
given these instructions:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

I believe I was able to remove one partition; although
when it boots up, it still asks me to choose which I
want. (It now appears to have XP installed on both
partitions, at least when I boot up, but when I'm in
Windows, under "My computer," It only shows one drive
instead of the two it used to show).

I have tried to continue with the "clean install" after
removing the extra partition. However, it almost finishes
installing, then I get an error message. It has done this
three times in a row. I cannot exit out of installation,
because it believes it has not finished (which it hasn't).
But I should be able to exit that cycle with the command
choice it gives me, correct (F3 I believeit is)?

Here are the error messages I have received each time:

Error:
Setup cannot upgrade some settings. After setup
completes, you may need to reinstall one or more programs.

Error:
An error has been encountered that prevents setup from
continuing. Setup will now restart your computer and try
again. If this error continues to occur, select Cancel
Windows XP setup when your computer restarts. Press OK to
view the Setup Log File.
(BTW, I tried to select "cancel Windows XP" when the
computer restarted and it didn't make any difference)

Error:
Because of errors during processing, documents and other
files were left in C:\user~tmp.@01.[error=145(91h)]

Error:
MigMain Init: MemDbLoad could not load
C:\WINDOWS\Setup\ntsetup.dat [ERROR=3]

Error:
W95UpgNt_Migrate: MigMain_Init failed [ERROR=3}

Is this too much? Should I call tech support? Should I
buy a new computer?! I just want to wipe my hard drive
clean and start over, basically. I have all my software
and a brand new XP. Perhaps I should also note that the
computer came with Windows 98; what I have is an UPGRADE
of XP; it's not the full install version. Would that make
a difference?

Thanks so much for all your help. I am prepared to call
tech support, but I would like to avoid spending more
money right now...if you all can and will help me, I'll be
very grateful.

Sincerely,
EmilY Waugh

If you restart you compute with the windows XP cd in the
drive. It should tell you to press any key to boot of
the cd. If you press any key and follow the prompts
you'll get to an option that allows you to delete the
partitions on your machine. DELETE ALL OF THEM. and then
let XP create a partition and continue the installation.
This option will delete everything on your machine.

Al,

Thank you--this is very good advice! Only one question:
My version of 98 is a full install, but it's on CD--that
should still work, right? As long as I use E:\ (or the
letter of my CD drive) instead of A:\, right?

Thank you so much!!

If your version of windows 98 is a full install then
shutdown your computer, insert your boot floppy (startup
disk), then turn it back on. Let it load up to the a:/
prompt, type fdisk and hit enter. Hit #3 to delete
primary partition on hard drive. Hit esc, Hit #1, create
a primary partition. Answer Yes to the prompts unless you
wish to split the hard drive into partitions. Resart your
computer leaving all disks in. After it loads to the a:/
prompt type in format c:/
A warning message will appear, answer yes to this and
wait until it formats your hard drive. Name it if you
like otherwise hit enter. When it gets to the a:/ prompt
type setup.exe and enter (make sure you ahve the windows
98 cd in now. Let it go through and install windows 98,
make sure you have the cd key handy. After windows 98
installs, restart. After it finishes booting up insert
the winXP cd and install.

From there once the installation is complete it is a
matter of activating and installing any other software.

Good Luck,

Al

You'll need a boot disk, www.bootdisk.com, to do what you want.
