Crashing with Error Report - IE6 SP1

H

Harold Kimmey

I have looked through the last 15 days of messages and
tried to execute all of the suggestions that appeared
applicable to the problem, but to no avail. This includes
a recent suggestion by Henri Leboeuf (thank you).

I am experiencing the following problem. I start Internet
Explorer and it goes immediately into "Microsoft Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience." Then it asks if I want
to send a report and restart. I have sent the report, but
no luck. When it re-starts it cycles back to the same pop-
up window. The "error signature" is:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName:
shell32.dll
ModVer: 4.72.3812.600 Offset: 00001af2
Exception Information: Code: 0xc0000005, Flags
0x00000000, Record 0x0., Address: 0x0000000066801af2

Module 1 - SHFOLDER.DLL

Things I have tried and checked, but have not worked so
far:
1) Repair (through add/remove programs)
2) Re-install IE 6 SP 1
3) Clean-Boot
4) Setting all IE options I can find to the default
5) Deleted all the cookies and temporary files.
6) Run Ad-Aware (spyware removal)
7) Run MacAfee virus check
8) Run CWShredder
9) Run Spybot
10) Unchecked the "Enable 3rd party browser extensions" in
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
11) Disabled MacAfee, no ad checking process running or
other process running than when it last worked.
12) Read the security tips from
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Any help would be appreciated. How can I tell what step
in the loading of IE is causing the problem?

Sincerely,

Harold Kimmey

Checking your system for "hijackware":

CoolWebSearch Chronicles

Important! You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the HijackThis Logs forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

[Many anti-spyware sites continue to suffer from a week-long DoS attack.
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page: http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Robear Dyer (PA Bear),

I have done all of the items listed below. What else can
I do to identify the problem?
