CPU_IDLE & A7N8X DLX2

Does CPUidle work well for any folks still using W98?
It seems to make a 2-3 degrees C diff on my diode temp, but perhaps
the HLT instruction is already implemented? The tray icon is horribly
corrupt also.

Many modern mother boards have the CPU HLT commands hidden and
disabled in the BIOS because of stability problems over the years with
some hardware.nothing to worry about if you have a decent set of
temps/HSF combo.Re-enabling them with software can lead to problems so
don't bother.you will grow weary of the system well before any
difference Idle cooling will make on a Desktop.
HTH :)

I use WPCREDIT and set Offset 6F to 1F, this enables the S2K Bus
Disconnect which the A7N8X and A7N8X Deluxe support, if the 6F = 0F or
9F then it's disabled for sure. At idle my CPU die temps drops about 8C
with it enabled, would probably be 10C but I have thermal fans, so my
system just gets nice and quite when it's not working hard.

btw, I've had my board for 7 months and it hasn't effected the stability
one bit, and I'm overclocking too, Barton 2800+ @ 2315MHz 210x11 1.75v.

Cheers,
Ed

Oh forgot to mention, you need a Revision 2.0 board, it won't work on
the 1.0x boards. It works on the Abit Nf2 boards too, that's where I
found out about it. ;p

CPUIdle 6b seems to be setting offset 6F = 9F

You saying that WPCredit can do what CPUIdle does without having to have it
loaded?

CPUIdle 6b seems to be setting offset 6F = 9F

The default for my board (non-dlx) (BIOS 1004) is 9F.
If I set 6F to 0F the cpu die temp goes sky high like if its running
prime95 or something!

Ben

Just fire up WPCREDIT and look at what value you have for offset 6F,
change it and exit the program, no need to run any software, set it and
forget it.

WPCWRITE(spell?) program can do this for you once you set it up, I just
never got around to trying it, wrote a simple lil app in VB6 to just run
WPCREDIT and key it for me. ;p

I read about it in some Linux users forum running nf2 Abit boards and
Asus guys were saying it worked on their v2 A7N8X boards too, so I tried
it. If your CPU is under full load all the time (folding @ home etc, etc)
then it won't do anything for you, but I'm sure YOU know that! ;p

OK. Well I can set CPUIdle to either get itself or the OS to (from what I
gather) issue the HLT instruction. Both seem about the same.

Nice. So the chipset itself can issue the HLT command, depending on that
register? You know what register and it is and what all the bits do?

Yeah :) Well I didn't notice any major difference after installing
CpuIdle, I think I know why now.

I have a plug-in for WPCREDIT for the Ultra 400, all the other bits for
6F all say Reserved. I just e-mail it to you.

Thanks Ed... no sign of it yet, which is odd.

I sent it to your ".name" addy found on your faq page, attached is a
..zip & .gif, hmmmm? it hasn't bounced back & mail seems ok here AFAIKT.

I expect it to turn up at some point... it can take a while.

Unfortunately due to the way the .name works, and how I currently have it
set up, there'll be an MX record resulting in a redirect, it then goes
through about 5 Verisign machines, and is forwarded to the final address. I
should be able to cut out those Verisign machines, which will help
considerably. I've noticed that mail can take half an hour sometimes, but
it seems to be getting worse. At other times it might be almost instant.

OK, well it came up with a problem about device ID and Vendor ID, I
continued anyway and it labels up the 5th bit at 6F as the S2K bus
disconnect bit. Ooh, and I got the AGP Aperture, too, and Fast Writes, and
and side band addressing. And FSB Control, but no idea what it does :)

Looks interesting, I'll have a play some other time :) I suspect most of
those values were obtained by experimentation with just changing the
settings elsewhere and observing.

Cheers,

Nice one, got it.

Ben

I see under Bridge Host/Offset 49/Bit 1, AGP Side Band is disabled,
using WCPUID it says it's "supported" but disabled too, is AGP side
banding supported on a Nf2 w/9800 pro, would it make any difference in
performance if I did enable it?

Hmmmm, mine says S2K is the 4th bit, maybe because I have the non-dlx
board it's different?

I got mail, basically says, read error,

Warning: message still undelivered after 4 hours
Will keep trying until message is 2 days old

So maybe you'll get it in a couple days! :)

Wahoo! It's arrived! Not bad... just over a day :p

Time to do something about my email, I think.
