Thanks for your reply. I have scanned my computer for viruses, an
nothing came up. As well as this I have used AdAware and Spybot (whic
are both up-to-date) and nothing has come up. I have also checke
startup with any abnormalities and I cannot seem to locate anything,

Its pretty simple to chk that out,use the Msconfig utility as outlined in kb
310560 Once youve edited Msconfig, restarted xp,chk the CPU when back in
xp,then enable services one at a time, till you locate the problem source....

A number of programmes use Explorer.exe. There's the problem. You can
see this using Process Explorer.

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:

Hope this helps.

I downloaded the program and am running it. It gives me a lot of information
that I'm afraid I don't fully understand. I note I'm running a lot of
"mutant" files within Explorer.exe. Is that the problem and should I try to
delete them? Unfortunately I can't get the "Help" to run.
Thanks
TAC
