CPU performance shoots up overnight.

I am running a 1.3g processor with 512k RAM and 40gig hard drive.

I have had a problem with CPU usage being high and after varoius virus scans
and spyware scans decided to try re-installing windows XP yesterday.

All went successfully and processor speed was down at around 45%. Before I
installed any software I created a restore point and checked processor speed
was ok. I did this for all of my software and retired to bed last night a
happy man, content that the problem was solved.

I got up today and turned on my computer, checked CPU usage and to my
horror found the processor speed back at 80%. System restore, I thought. So
I turned back the clock to late last night and checked my CPU
usage...........80%.

Please somebody help me............This problem is driving me insane!

Which Process is using the CPU? What applications are running?

Any Error Reports in Event Viewer? Please post copies ensuring that the
Event Type is Error.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

I believe what you are concerned with is processor *usage* and not
speed.

Open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and go to the Processes tab.
Click twice on the CPU column header to sort the processes list into
descending order based on CPU usage. All of the items that are using
significant amounts of processor time will now be at the top of the
list.

Make note of all of the items that are using a substantial amount of
time (e.g. more than 2 or 3%) and post that list back here.
