My chip is a P4 2.0 Ghz and the cmos reports that after I press f1. My
mobo is a TH7ii RAID.

My memory is Samsung MR16R1628AF0-CK8 256x4.

When I enter the bios by pressing del the info on my chip is greyed out
(although it looks correct)

and the setting for my cpu is 800(100)

I just reset the CMOS and replaced the battery. I still get this
error.

I have read that there is a setting in the cmos "Speed Error Hold"
needs to be disabled. This

option in my cmos is disabled and greyed.

I have also read that I need to put the correct speed settings. They
are set at 800(100). Is this

the correct setting for a P4 2.0 GHz chip?

The FSB for your P4 is 400 not 800.

If you cut and paste the error msg above into a google search you'll see
lots of possible answers. Most along the lines of FSB or multipliers are
incorrectly set by overclocking.

After you scan for viruses and adware. Try reseting you cmos jumper to
reset factory defaults. Usually something like power off, move
CMOS jumper to reset or shipping, power on for 1-3 sec., power off, move
CMOS jumper to normal, power on, set bios to default and multiplier or FSB
to factory default for your mb/cpu.

I have googled for this error message often. I read all of the
possible answers, but I was still unsure what settings I should use.

I was unaware that my FSB settings should have been 400, but after
reading your message I changed my settings to user defined and the
lowest setting was 800(100). The strange thing is that even though the
only thing I changed was the setting to user defined this made the
message go away. I have been getting this message forever when I was
using the machine, but I am handing this machine down to my niece and
nephew and I really wanted to stop it.

Your message is the one that did it. I still don't know what I did but
it seems to be fixed now.

Thank you

How about loading something like Belarc or Everest
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
http://www.lavalys.com/

These will tell you what you have in your system and what the chip is
set at. If it is half what it should be you may have hit the lever that
changes your motherboard setting. Finding the motherboard make and
model number will allow you to look it up on the manufacturer's site.
Don't go following any systems analyst's misdirections.

You can't save information from the BIOS to anywhere useful for
investigation. Going in there with a printed list for readjusting the
settings is one thing. If you have the handbook you might be OK.

Quite frankly you want to keep out of their until you are a lot more
certain of what happens in the BIOS. Taking your motherboard's battery
out and draining the static from the computer will reset the bios to
it's default. You may need toreset the date and time when you restart
it.

Once you have done that you need to boot into the bios anfd choose your
settings carefully according to what is in the book or just leave it as
it is for now. You might want to check that your first boot device is
your CD drive.

Well maybe it just took a reset. I'm not sure what is speed setting
except Intel says "external bus speed" which I take to be the speed of the
Rambus memory.

Interesting information.
Now let's say that I have a PC Chips board, and about a year ago, I
mistakenly flashed my BIOS with the wrong upgrade. Everything went
dead.

Is it possible to "reflash" the BIOS to ERASE the bad upgrade by a
similar method to what you just described, or do I need to buy a new
BIOS chip?

I don't particularly mind buying a BIOS chip. They can be had for $10
plus shipping, but I am one who HATES spending money, throwing stuff
away if I don't HAVE to.

Bios is different from CMOS. However, if you get the correct bios
version for your mother you should be able to flash the correct BIOS.
Then do the CMOS reset before you boot the new bios.

I checked the FAQs at PC CHIPS on this. They're a little less optimistic
than I am but they do expect you can recover. Also, they don't
mention the CMOS clear but I had to do that flashing my ECS m/b.

FAQ:
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Support/G_FAQ.aspx?MenuID=108&LanID=2#q4

Use the utility to make a backup of the bios before you flash it. You
should probably download the original m/b bios if they have it along with
the latest greatest bios for your version of the motherboard.

Thanks much! I am one who LOVES to tinker! And I believe that I have
enough spare parts laying around to build a computer so I can fix this
BIOS! I HATE to chuck a perfectly good (if clunky) mobo merely
because I didn't read the "Wrong file" message in time.

At worst, I've done no damage, as I had planned on replacing the BIOS
chip anyway!

Happy New Year!
