counterfeit software message - RESOLVED

W

wayne.edmonds

If anyone (like me) suddenly started to receive "You may be a victim of
software counterfeiting. This copy of Windows is not genuine and is
not eligible to receive all updates and product support from
Microsoft" i now know the reason.

I started to receive this message on an Enterprise version of Windows
XP pro. I had around 5 machines encounter this message for no reason
and a further 100+ machines on a network which were using the same
serial number.

This was caused by the Genuine Advantage Tool KB905474. On updating
our Windows XP Pro machines around 2 weeks ago with this tool direct
from MS website we started to receive the error message. On the 30th
May (yesterday) a new update was published by MS which appeared to
resolve the problem.

On contacting MS i have now had confirmation of this and admision from
MS that the problem was theirs.

Hope this helps some people out.

Nice one MS..... (again)

I have Dell 600 laptop with either the original software or I've rebuilt the
software using the disk supplied with the computer and still receive the
"conterfeit" message. Anyone know what to do?

Thanks

Visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and revalidate.
Reboot your computer after this is done. Let us know if
this fixes the issue.
