It's evident that the (default) value for the mailto: command is missing. Try this first:

Click Start, select Default Programs
Click Set program access and computer defaults
Click Custom, and select Windows Mail
Click OK

If all goes well, the mailto: protocol entry should be restored. If not, post back.

Thank GOD!!! I've spent hours looking through all these solution, checking
the default settings of Windows Mail and IE, then fianlly got to the Protocol
solution- with NO directions as to how to get the MailTo Protocol added the
list.....This very simple fix did the trick!!! Thank you for returning me to
my work and getting me back to being PRODUCTIVE!!!

Well, you must be one of the few unlucky ones, because Vista
has been trouble-free for me and most people I deal with.
Vista problems are usually due to running old (non-compatible)
software and drivers.
