corrupt IE

After removing some spyware/adware/BHO's using Spybot, Ad-aware, and Hijack
This, I feel that something has corrupted Internet Explorer. The machine is
using XP Home and has the latest updates installed. I've used several tools
I got from work to repair IE, but nothing has worked. I went to the Windows
Kbase site to see what I could find out about reinstalling/repairing IE but
nothing helped. Then, after searching through this discussion group, I
discovered SP2 had to be uninstalled. After uninstalling SP2, I tried to
reinstall IE6 and it worked, however it did not solve my problem.

The problem I am having is this: I can open IE and go to websites, however
it loads them in a basic HTML format (Gmail, eBay) and it wont even load the
Windows Update site. I can still use Automatic Update. I've installed
Firefox which works fine, but I prefer to use IE. Please let me know if
there is anything I can do.

How did you use HijackThis to remove spyware/adware? Post the URL for the
forum thread where you posted your HijackThis log for interpretation by an
expert.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,

I did not post a Hijack This log anywhere for interpretation. The only thing
that removed using Hijack This would be toolbars that were installed because
of spyware/adware (ie: MyWay, MyWeb, ...).

Might I suggest you do so, Ryan?

Considering I've already removed the items, what good would it do? I work in
an IT department and I know that everything that is showing up in the log is
legit.

And I suggest that you've missed something, despite the fact that you work
in an IT department and therefore must know everything.

Best of luck.

Now, if I knew everything, I wouldn't have come to this place for help. ;-)

Thank you for your attempt at helping me with my problem, but I have since
resolved it. After removing MSJVM and installing the Java Console from Sun
Microsystems, everything works fine. Again...thanks!

Thanks for posting back. I suspect you could have simply install the Sun
Java runtimes without removing Java VM and resolved the problem.

Millions of WinXP SP2 users who started out with WinXP or WinXP SP1 (not
WinXP SP1a which did not include Java VM) are still using Java VM as their
default (albeit with Sun Java runtimes also installed) and have no problems
accessing Gmail and eBay.
