Understand that import/export is not recommended to move contacts from
Outlook 2003 on desktop computer to Outlook 2002 on a laptop. But am totally
confused on the right way to do this.

On Computer containing Outlook 2003:
In Outlook, do File-New-Outlook Data File and be SURE you choose the
97-2002
format.
Then copy your Contact data to this new Personal Folders File.
Close Outlook.
Search for, and copy the newly-created pst file. Default location and
probable name are:
C:\Documents and Settings\{Your User Name here}\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook[1].pst. (You may have to enable Hidden and
System files in your search)

On the New computer:
Copy the pst file to your HDD. Do NOT overwrite any existing file. Remove
any read-only attribute. (Right-Click-Properties).
Open Outlook.
Do File-Open-Outlook Data File and navigate to where you copied the file.

Drag and drop the data from the old file to the new

Yes - it's best to put them into View-By Category then they are just a
list....

When I copy the transferred contacts can I merge the transferred contacts
data or will the existing contact data on the destination computer be lost?

If you select them all and drag and drop, then they should be added.
However, as with all data operations like this, it's best to take a
backup first!

Your PSt contains all your Outlook data, so copying it will automatically
copy the contacts.

Did you close Outlook first? (Use Task manager to check it really IS
closed...)
