copy files to CD-Writer

B

Bob - RR

Hi:

I have a file that is 1 gig. I tried copying this file to E: which is a
cd-rom writer and DLA started up. It won't copy the file because it is
larger than 720 meg.

How do I copy a file larger than what will fit on the CD to the CD?

Thank you.

Bob

Purchase and install a DVD-R or DVD-RW drive. A DVD disk
has a storage capacity of approx. 4.7MB

Hi:

Thanks but is there a utility that will split a file between cd's? Such as
Winzip...winzip could do this between floppies.

Thanks.

Umm you can't. It's like trying to fit an adult into a child seat. Just
won't fit. You could try zipping the file up using Winzip or another
archiving software and see if that reduces it enough to fit into a CD, but
while it's bigger than will fit in it, it won't.

Yo,
Winzip and Winrar can split the archive into sets. If you have to have the
file unzipped (for example a pqi file from Drive Image) those applications
allow you to split the file into CD-Rom sized chunks. If it is an AVI movie
file, you can split it in two also with VirtualDub or using any other
splitters.

You can not copy a file larger than a CD to a CD. It will not automatically
cut off and tell you to insert next CD. You will have to split the file
yourself.

Hi, Bob!
WinZip can split files. Here from the WinZip help:
"To split a Zip file into smaller pieces:
Open or create the Zip file.
Choose Split from the Actions menu.
Specify the name to be used for the split Zip file. The name must be
different from the name of the open Zip file.
Specify the size to be used for the individual parts. You can choose
from common sizes using the Part size drop-down list or you can specify
your own size. To specify your own size, choose "Other size" in the
drop-down list and type the desired size in the Other size field. You
can specify the size in bytes, kilobytes (KB), or megabytes (MB);
indicate which you're using by clicking the appropriate radio button.
The minimum size allowed is 65,536 bytes (64KB).
Click OK to create the split Zip file. "

Hi:

Thank you for your responses. I did use WinZip to split the file into 2
chunks - 620 meg and 450 meg. Then dragged and dropped to the cd-burner
(used DLA).

As a side thought - how much to dvd burners cost? I don't have any front
slots available but do have the firewire port front and back. Do they make
external dvd burners that run off the firewire? What do these burners
cost - any ideas?

Thanks.

You can purchase a nice DVD-RW (including burning software) for around
$139 or less at www.newegg.com. It can replace your CD burner since it
will also burn CDs.
