Copy files and folders to a CD

I am running XP Home on my system and I am trying to back
up some files to CDs with the copy utility that comes
with XP. Roxio seems to feel if they ignore me long
enough I will go away. I have been trying for over three
weeks to get them to help me, with no success.

I printed the Help and Support page "To copy files and
folders to a CD."

I followed steps 1 thru 6 but the files never
transferred. When I click on "Write these files to CD"
Windows displayed the CD Writing Wizard. The progress bar
showed the green dashes advancing across the bar while
displaying the message "Writing data files to CD" but the
light on my CD drive did not blink. When the green dashes
finished up it took almost five minutes to finally give
me a message to the effect that a writing error had been
made.

Also, between steps 3 and 4 there is a paragraph that
states "If the files are located in My Pictures, under
Picture Tasks, click "Copy to CD" or "Copy all items to
CD," and then skip to step 5. There is NO Picture Tasks
selection in the various menus under My Computer.

Please advise.

The main question all readers of this post are going to have is
Are you using CD-Rs or CD-RWs
Supply the answer to that question, and someone will go ou
of their wits to provide assistance.

Firs, try a different CD, and make sure it is inserted with the writable
side down. Some CD's look the same on both sides, if so try the side that is
down in the package.

Also, if you have Roxio software, you should try using the software
directly, you should have an icon on your desktop or on the Start/Programs
menu called Easy CD Writer.
When you put qa blank CD in the drive, Easy CD Writer is supposed to start
automatically. Of it does not, the CD may not be a blank writable CD, even
though it is brand new out of a package.

Your post is a little confusing to me. If you have Roxio installed, you should be using their
software application to create a CD. The directions you're following are for using XP's inbuilt CD
burning. When using 3rd party CD burning, the option "Enable CD recording on this drive." should be
UNchecked.

Per your last question:

'Picture Tasks' only appear in the Common Tasks Panel, so if you're using classic folder view, you
won't see them. In addition, they only appear for those folders which are using a 'Pictures' or
'Photo Album' template. However, when the native burning has been disabled, this option no longer
appears.

Thanks for your reply. I do have Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
Platinum BUT Roxio sent me some instructions when my
app "went south" and, when I followed that I kept getting
error messages at the end of the recording session. I
sent the error message numbers to Roxio on two separate
occasions but Roxio has ignored me for over three weeks
now.

I am using FUJIFILM CD-R 1x up to 24X write speed. Is
there a brand that is always good right out of the
package?

Frankly, the engine supplied by Roxio to MSoft (and Roxio will wash
their hands of it) is not very satisfactory. If it works, it is OK,
within its limits, but there are quite a lot of drives which 'for one
reason or another' - to quote a comment that was in the related inf file
- do not work with the methods it uses. If you have such a drive - and
it sounds as if you have - the only realistic thing to do is to get a
third party burning program, which will be more comprehensive and
flexible any way. Suggestions are Nero from www.nero.com or RecordNow
deluxe from www.sonic.com/products/default.asp (or the non-deluxe if
you do not want the associated DLA for true drag and drop burning of
CD-RW)

Thanks for the reply. I am rapidly coming around to your
thoughts about a third party app OTHER THAN ROXIO. What
are your thoughts about BACKUP NOW3 Deluxe Suite?

I don't know it I'm afraid. The backup program I actually use is an old
one, no longer available (but it works). The one that I have tried and
thought quite a good one was BackUpMyPC from, again www.stompinc.com or
www.sonic.com - it is by Veritas, a good source, who do not sell direct
these days
