..wps is an MS Works file. Either install works on the new computer or open
the files in MS Word 2000 and edit it in word.

Strange... Office2000 (Word) can open wps-files(MS Works), which then you
can save as doc-file?

Lydia, exactly what error message, if any, are you getting?
("I can't do it" covers a lotta ground.) There's specific
advice for specific problems but we have to know what the PC
is saying to you. Two general tips:

[1] Don't try to open the files directly from the floppy.
Copy them to your hard disk with Windows Explorer first,
then try opening from there. Especially if the floppy is
very full or has been used for a long time, this can make
a big difference between healthy files and corrupted ones.
Never save directly to, or open directly from, a floppy disk.

[2] You can sometimes get into a problematic file using Word
by clicking File->Open, broswing to the file, then CHANGING
the 'Files of Type' box to select "Recover text from any file"
and then clicking Open. This won't capture formatting and
graphics but will sometimes salvage the text. (Note: Be sure
to un-set that option afterward, as it's "sticky" and will
confuse you thoroughly next time you open an ordinary file.)

Look in the Office download catalog for Works Converter for
Office, then open Office (Word) and use the file menu to
open your old Works files.

The converter will open and convert the file format to .doc
