{640167b4-59b0-47a6-b335-a6b3c0695aea} = Portable Media Devices

This pasted in the Run command should open Portable Media Devices...

file:///::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\::{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}\::{640167b4-59b0-47a6-b335-a6b3c0695aea}

If Portable Media Devices is hidden from the Control Panel...

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\DisallowCpl

Look for: Portable Media Devices

Value Name will have a # like 1 or 2, etc.
Portable Media Devices will be listed in the Value Data.

If found, delete it.

If you have XP Pro (does not work with XP Home) use gpedit.msc
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |
Navigate to >>>
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel

Double click on: Hide specified control panel applets.
Click the Show button.
If Portable Media Devices is listed, click on it to highlight and click the
Remove button.
Click Apply and click OK.

Thank youi very much for the reply. When I went to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurretnVersion\Policies\Explorer,
it is at this point I could go no further. I could not find DisallowCpl as
you suggested to look for. I could use some continued help to try to resolve
this issue.

I have Windows Media Player 10. I only installed the POS because I thought
it would play MP4s. It doesn't.

WMP 10 is what added Portable Media Devices. WMP9 never had that. The
reason that I know about hiding Portable Media Devices from the Control
Panel, is because I did it on my machine. WMP11 also adds Portable Media
Devices. I know nothing about WMP11.

You might try uninstalling and then reinstalling WMP10 or 11, what ever it
is that you have.
