Control Panel Missing from Computer

I am using a 1 + year old Dell dimension desktop operating on Windows XP. About 2 days ago my control panel dissappeared (not just an icon - the entire control panel is gone). I run free AVG virus as well as free AVG spyware, spybot and PC-Cillin (came with computer). There have been MANY viruses and spyware that have been cleaned. My husband blindly surfs and has brought home friends before, but this one has got me. If I try to access task manager, I am locked out and advised that I do not have administrative access. If I try to move files to a backup DVD, the computer resets itself. The DELL support person remoted in and was stumped. He stated it was too deep in the system and has locked all administrative access. I need help! Any ideas out there??

You will have to excuse my ignorance. I know enough about computers to muddle through things, but I am not an expert by any means. I am assuming that you are telling me to have a daily log to show the symptoms to rule things out? I can do that - I tried a few things last night (right clicking on the bottom task bar and selected administrative tools for the start menu but when I selected any of those options, a box came up stating that the tools have been disabled and to contact the administrator). I have been able to save about half of my files to CD and back up means, but it apparently got wise and kept shutting down back to desktop with an error message. I will try again tonight to copy the exact text of that error message.

It will analyse what is on your computer and the log that it produces can be posted onto this thread.Don't worry about using it - I've used it myself, it's very safe and it helped me in the past. Once the log is posted then people at PCR, who are very good at this sort of thing, will be able to assess it and hopefully
help you out.

These are the nasties I picked up and which should be fixed. Wait for a second opinion though before you do anything drastic, or you aren't sure about.

I think the two above is the piece of software stopping you from looking at the control panel. Make sure you remove both of them



You also seem to have a number of unnecessary files, but its best to wait for someone like muckshifter to double check.

You have a couple of extreme Nasties running on your PC ... not just the ones Mike mentioned ... this is not the first time I have seen these particular nasties ...

I suggest you do this ...

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe


After the above: ...

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program

Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(NOTE: If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.


Next ...

Download ComboFix from HERE to your Desktop, or a folder of choice.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt.

Note: Do not move the mouse or click while it's running.
That may cause it to stall.


Next ...

Reboot and "copy/paste" a combofix.txt Log and a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Okay, I have a glimmer of hope! A few of the things listed are what my computer is saying! If my computer will let me log on tonight, I too will run this command for your help! I was able to find the control panel, but it just won't let me have any control of the computer. We had a houseguest last night so I couldn't run it then. You guys are awesome, you have no idea how much this means to me!!!!

Please turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point

I suggest you go get a couple of Anti-Spyware programs, such as, SuperAntiSpyware & SpybotSearch&Destroy and install SpywareBlaster ... second page HERE

You have a few too many programs loading unnecessary ... all 04 are programs that load when you boot your PC ... choose the ones you need, uninstall the others.

Thank you so much for looking at this. I am with you on everying but one: When you told me to create a restore point, what do you mean by that? I understand how you do the turn off/on the system restore, but I want to make sure I do everything else correct. In the mean time I will do the hjt fix and follow your directions. Will do. Also, is it a problem that the one command that I couldn't find is not there? I couln't check to clean it since I didn't see it - is it still here somewhere? Also, when I do the system restore step, will that give me the administrative controls back because I am still restricted? Lastly, I did not understand what you asked about create a restore point; could you explain that step so I don't mess anything up.

I just tried to fix O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrum220.txtbut it won't go away. I clicked on Info about selected and this is what is says: "Files specified in the AppInit_DLLs Registry value are loaded very early in Windows startup and stay in memory until system shutdown. This way of loading a .dll is hardly ever used except by trojans. The WinLogon Notify Registry subkeys load dll files into memory at about the same point in the boot process, keeping them loaded into memory until the session ends. Apart from several Windows system components, the programs VX2, ABetterInternet and Look2Me use this Registry key. Since both methods ensure the dll file stays loaded in memor the entire time, fixing this won't help if the dll puts back the Registry value or key immediately. In such cases, the use of the "delete file on reboot" function or KillBox is recommended to first delete the file.

Okay...after several trys, I was able to delete the file, but only in Safe Mode as the administrator. I am still locked out of all administrative controls, though. When I tried your suggestion of the System Restore, the following box comes up: "Restrictions - This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I can tell that fixing the other files has worked because the pop-ups and my anti-virus/spyware are chilling out now (earlier I had a ton of trojan alerts).

Download CWShredder and click on Fix.

This is really getting ridiculous! I clicked on the link, downloaded and when I selected run, the following error came up: "C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\A82PV5cc\CWShredder[1].exe is not a valid Win32 application."



We've made it this far, any ideas??? I am going to try it in safe mode as the administrator and see if that works. I will post another thread as soon as I try that. This is CRAZY!!! Again, thank you for putting so much effort into this for a stranger - I really do appreciate it!

Hey...Great news! My computer is now working. I posted a thread on one more website to see if anyone else knew what was going on and we got it figured out.

In case this comes up again, this is what we did:

I had to download ATF Cleaner by Atribune, then download ComboFix and run that program. After posting the new logs (ComboFix and HJT), I had to Open notepad and copy/paste the text that he stated into it, save the note pad as one more name and drag it into ComboFix and run one more report, after posting one more log, my computer was working again!

It ended up being the following files causing the problems:

C:\WINDOWS\AUTOLNCH.REG:yrcfh -> TrojanDownloader.Agent.bq

C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinAvXX.exe
Description: Malware related to and installed with different rogue anti-spyware programs including WinAntiSpyware 2006 or WinAntiSpyware 2007. This Trojan is responsible for the fake security alerts being displayed in your Windows taskbar.

C:\DOCUME~1\Gary\APPLIC~1\errprotec.exe
Trojan.Agent.avq is a group of Trojan Downloaders which downloads malicious files and install multiple unwanted applications of adware and malware from remote servers.
