Control Panel error message

G

Guest

When I open Control Panel I get the following message:

An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file:
C/windows/system32/netsetup.cpl

Do You want to continue? I click yes and it works ok but the message is
annoying.

My operating system is Windows XP Service Pack 2. My Browser is internet
Explorer 7.0.5730.11

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Uninstall this crap!

"An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file
C:\windows\system32\netsetup.cpl"
You receive an "Error occurred while Windows was working with the Control
Panel file" error message when you open Control Panel in Windows XP SP2
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892890

Are you using Verizon? Or SBC?

netsetup.cpl is related to IPMON32. IPMON32 = IPMON32.exe

ipmon32.exe is an application from Verizon. It provides the user with
monitor diagnostic tools. It is known to consume large amount of resources.

[[Q: Is IP insight really needed?
A: No it's not necessary at all. It's a diagnostic tool that Verizon techs
can use to troubleshoot connection problems on your line. IP Insight is a
Quality of Service and/or diagnostic package - but it's not used by VOL at
this time - there's no back-end companion for tech support or NOC to use to
access it... It does send "phone home" data used to check latency and
network traffic occasionally, but like any other features that it contains
are unused or not implemented.]]
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1247

IPMon32.exe seems to be related to spyware.

C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPMon32.exe

C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Visual IP InSight\IPHook32.dll

Thank you for the reply. I am using Verizon DSL. I downloaded their security
tools because of the free anti-virus. I don't use their bowser. I use
Explorer 7. Should I uninstall all Verizon plug-ins? I use Yahoo as my home
page. Now it displays Verizon Yahoo. I don't use anything from Verizon except
the anti-virus.

thinman,

If you have Visual IP InSight, uninstall it. See...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892890

My rule is to never, ever download any ISP's software.

Go to Add or Remove Programs from the Control Panel and look for Visual IP
InSight, IP InSight or similar and uninstall it.

Or Ask Verizon for help on how to get rid of it. I just looked around a
little at Verizon's website and got fed up and quit.

Wesley,

Thanks. Found Visual IP InSight and uninstalled it. What about Verizon
Yahoo! Applications 88.11 MB? Normally I never download anything from an ISP
either. They hooked me with the free anti-virus from Computer Associates. I'm
not sure it even works that great. Shame on me for bending my rule.

Hi Thinman,

Comcast offers free McCrappy, I mean free McAfee VirusScan, Personal
Firewall Plus and Privacy Service. Most ISPs offer free antivirus because
it is in the ISPs interest that their customer's machines not turn into
virus infected spamming machines that would clog up the ISPs bandwidth and
infect more of their cusomer's machines.

I use Internet Explorer 6, Outlook Express for mail and newsgroups, and
right now XP's firewall and AVG 7 free antivirus.

I do not use Yahoo go to Yahoo or otherwise have anything to do with Yahoo.
Nor am I a yahoo, look it up. But it would be my guess that Verizon
probably just branded their version of a Yahoo browser so when opened it
reads Verizon Yahoo instead of just Yahoo. <shrug> The Verizon Yahoo
listed in Add or Remove Programs may be more than just a browser, I honestly
do not know. If you do not use it, for web based mail or just as a web
browser, if you use Internet Explorer, Outlook Express or Firefox for
example, uninstall it. SBC has a Yahoo browser which is probably the same
as Verizon's with the name in the title changed to protect the guilty. ;-)

Before you uninstall it, look in C:\Program Files or on your Start menu for
anything related to Verizon or Yahoo to make sure that it is NOT something
that you use. I have no way of knowing what you do or do not use. And one
man's junk is another's treasure. ;-)

Thanks for the info, I just uninstalled it and have not see the error pop up.
I am having another problem with brightness. My son was on the computer (you
know what that means) and now my background is very bright. I have tried to
fix it as much as I can with no luck, any suggestions?

Look at either the physical controls on your monitor or the software
controls if it has them. I know of no brightness controls in Windows. The
physical controls on your monitor would be like the brightness control knob
or buttons on your TV set.
