Contents of IE History column has disappeared

I discovered that my IE History column showed
only "History.IE5". It contained several folders such
as "MSHist012004031520040322" and the like. When I clicked
the folders they would all show a file "index.dat", which
I could not open. After trying all the settings I could
find that I thought might have a bearing on this, without
success, I finally deleted the "History.IE5" and all its
folders. Now nothing registers in my History column, NOR,
I might add, in my dropdown Address list.

Computer: 512 Meg memory, 2.8 gig Celeron, Windows XP Home
ed with SP1 and 2, current with Windows and IE updates.
Spybot S&D installed. Can anybody Help?

A problem with your Security software?
Check it out.

Cannot View Internet Explorer 6 History By Date
If you exit and restart I. E. 6 for Windows XP, and then try to view the
history by date, no data appears. This behavior may also occur when you
start Windows XP in Safe Mode, and you cannot resolve the behavior by
deleting the temporary Internet files, cookies, downloaded program files, or
the history in Internet Explorer 6.
