Consideration of an XP - 98 network ... configuration issue?

I have some bizarre issues on a 3 station mixed OS network [1]

Machine's 1 & 2 are Win98SE, machine 3 is a Compaq laptop running XP
Home

No's. 1 & 2 were on a P2P TCP/IP network, directly connected by a x-
over cable. An Epson printer is connected to No. 1

Both machine could share files/folders, and No.2 could print to the
Epson C20SX printer. There were no known issues with this 2 station
setup.

I added a D-Link switch[2] into the equation so i could add the laptop
onto the network, mainly to be able to print to the Epson printer.

When adding the printer to the laptop as a networked printer, i tell it
to look to No.1 to find the printer, it sees the printer, asks for the
location of the drivers, and installs them off the CD drive (it does
install Win2000 drivers, but these are also the correct XP drivers
according to Epson)

The laptop can see No, 1, it's files and folders, and the printer under
the network browser, but the moment i print a test page, a message is
displayed that it was "unable to print".

So i tried to print from No. 2 to verify the printer is correctly
networked. I can print without issue from No.2 to No.1

So, there is no issue when printing between the 98 machines, but when
printing from the XP machine, there is an error.

I can see the printer showing on the network when i browse the network
using the laptop, but i can't actually print anything to it.

The 2nd problem is that the laptop can see No.2 on the network, but
clicking it's icon in Network Places results in an "inaccessible" error
message basically suggesting i don't have the correct rights to access
the 98 machine!

When i joined the laptop onto the existing network, i set the IP
address as below, the subnet, and the workgroup.

Surely i don't need to run the XP Network wizard ?!??!

What considerations do i need to place in mind when networking a 'mix'
of OS's such as i have??

I've ruled out a switch/hub problem as each PC can see the other, and
can access files/folders without issue.

Any ideas on the printing issue??

Apologies for the subject line ... i intended to change it to reflect
better that it was a printer issue, but forgot and hit send!

These problems are caused by the new security model introduced in WinXP.
You need to log onto your two Win98 PC's with the same user name, as you
do on your XP machine. You should then be able to print and browse the
network from all 3 PC's. All your other network config is fine.

I will try this .... but duplicated usernames on a network, is that
what you are suggesting needs to occur?

The XP laptop will only occasionally be connected to the network, and
then really only for printer use.

So, i've got to log both win98 users onto their machines using the same
login as the XP laptop .... ??? How bizarre.

I have heard of it the other way round, where Win9x users have to have
an account created on the NTx machine to access it, but this doesn't
seem to be the case here, with both the 98 users able to see and access
the laptop without issue.

None the less, i will try what you suggest, and thank you, if it works.

Very similar to my setup, 1 print machine is 98SE, 2nd print m/c is
95, 3rd is Compaq laptop running XP pro, 4th is another XP pro
desktop. 3 & 4 don't have printers.

I occasionally ran into issues like this and it was always because one
of the machines had mysteriously "lost" its IP address and/or decided
to look for a DCHP server.
Are all your network cards working in "full duplex" mode as "half
duplex" can confuse printer software which tries to communicate back
to the PC?

I now have an ADSL modem/router in the network so everything is DCHP,
no further problems so far.

Would you be running Norton? Try this anyway...

If you are sure you have set up your accounts and shares correctly but you
still can't access a machine over your LAN and you get either access
permission errors or "Not enough server storage" then his might be worth
checking.

Look in the event log on the "server". This might be an ordinary PC in the
case of a home LAN, either way it's the PC hosting the share you are trying
to contact. See if there is an entry telling you the irpstacksize is too
small.

I believe this problems may be due to Norton Antivirus S/W.

Norton have this advisory (long URL may wrap to new line and need repair)

http://service1.symantec.com/suppor...88256d03005eb145?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

and Microsoft have this one..

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;106167

HOWEVER the above only mention the error message being "Not enough server
storage...". I found it can also give access permission errors (something
like "Access denied" or "Insufficient acesss", I can't remember exactly).
These are really confusing to someone trying to set up a home LAN.

Here is what I found...

irpstacksize = 11 (dec) causes access permission errors.
irpstacksize = 13/14 the error changed to "Not enough server storage" or
similar.
irpstacksize = 15 and my network shares now work fine.
