network printer problem between xp & 98se

Paul Hetherington

I have two computers networked via a Linksys wireless-b router. Internet
connection and file sharing run with no problems. The only problem is that
the 98 machine can't see the HP DeskJet 841c on the xp machine. I have the
printer shared (shows as shared when I browse the network on the xp); File &
Print Sharing are enabled on both; I have tried running just TCP/IP, just
IPX/SPX, running both, and probably a few other tweaks I can't remember
right now. Nothing I do will allow the 98 to see the printer on the xp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated before I start pulling my hair out.

Does the 98 box have a driver for the Deskjet?

Does the 98 box have a driver for the Deskjet?
In my (limited experience - one network comprising two XP and one Win98
FE with Epson 580 printer on one the XPs) the shared printer shows up in
Network Neighbourhood but will not work until you install the drivers on
the Win98 box.

Paul,
I have just done this, having set up a home network consisting of
one XP Pro, one XP Home and a Win98 FE. The printer is an Epson Stylus
580 on the XP home and it's set to Share in printer properties. It works
fine from my wife's XP Pro without installing a driver on that machine
but you will need to install the driver on the Win 98 machine.

Under Network in Control Panel on the Win98 Machine I have the following
protocols installed:

Client for MS networks
MS Family Login
IPX/SPX Protocol with Netbios allowed
TCP/IP with Netbios allowed
File & Printer sharing for MS Networks

You may find the following useful.

http://www.wown.info/articles_tutorials/wgprint.html
http://www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm

When you install the printer driver you will want to disable any
monitoring popups (eg, in my case the printer would show a not connected
USB error - not an error in this case!). Also, you should see the shared
printer in Network Neighbourhood on the Win 98 - right click it and and
select Capture Port.

Good luck!

Charlie.

Just curious here; you are not the first person to mention enabling
IPX/SPX on a home network which is presumably not connected to a Netware
server.

Can you explain the rationale for this?

The 98 machine doesn't see the printer on the xp in Network Neighborhood
even with the driver installed
