I have one PC connected to the internet using a modem router. This connects
over ppoe with a dynamic IP address. If i want to connect another PC to the
internet is it simply a case of plugging it into the router?. Do I have to
add any ip addresses to the second PC or will settings be detected
automatically?

Thanks if you can help

If you have a combination modem/router, it will have extra ports in the
back to connect other devices by ethernet. Normally all you need to do
is connect another computer (or device such as a network printer) to one
of those ports. If your computer is set to receive an IP address (DHCP)
and DNS automatically (the default setting), then you need do nothing more.

If the first PC is using a static IP, what settings would I have to input on
the second PC?

Thanks

Nothing unless you want the second PC to have a static IP also. In that
case you would simply assign a (different) static IP in the same subnet.
You can have computers and other devices on the same network where some
are using static IPs (as you always want to do in the case of servers,
network printers, computers that are going to be accessed remotely with
port-forwarding set up) and other computers are using dynamic IPs
(assigned from a DHCP server - usually a router in a home/small office
situation without a real server).
