Connecting to remote printer on XPSP2

G

Guest

I have a peer to peer network. One computer is Vista Home Basic while the
other is XP home edition. When trying to install a printer on the xp
computer to the vista computer I get the following message: "Cannot conect to
printer, Acces denied". I searched the microsoft knowledgebase and found a
solution, article 934643. the steps outlined to solve the problem apply only
to XP PRO; on XP Home, a more direct modification to the registry would
probably be required. Anyone who has had this problem and a solution?

I am also having the exact same problem with an Epson Stylus C60 inkjet
printer, right down to the same message. Sounds like a Vista problem. How
about some help microsoft.

One of the network developers had some questions

Is the customer not able to access only printer shares or both file &
printer shares?

Also, if you want to debug the issue, you can request the customer to send
us the output of "net share print$". This would display permissions
associated with print$.

You could ask customer(s) to disable and enable sharing; and see if that
helps.

I would love to know the application that changes the default windows
settings that causes this. Normally the Vista machine can access other
shares on XP only the spool directory has been reconfigured.

could you get me the "net share print$" information from the XP machine?

thanks

It's a sharing issue on the XP machine. Read the KB article if you have XP
Pro.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934643
Error message when you try to add a shared printer to a Windows Vista-based
computer: "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Access is denied"

on the XP machine open a cmd window and type. I expect that the XP machine
information has been modified.
net share print$

you should get something like this
E:\>net share print$
Share name print$
Path c:\windows\System32\spool\drivers
Remark Printer Drivers
Maximum users No limit
Users
Caching Manual caching of documents
Permission Everyone, READ

Hi,

I am having exactly the same issue and it seems there are many out there
also in the same position.

MY Vista machine can see my printers on my XP Home desktop but will not
alllow them to connect.

I looked at "net share print$" and I get everything I'm supposed to apart
from any permissions.

All I get is :
Share name print$
Path c:\windows\System32\spool\drivers
Remark Printer Drivers
Maximum users No limit
Users
Caching Manual caching of documents

I have tried turning the sharing on & off on the prinetr but still no change.

Any ideas?

Confirm the Vista machine is denied access to \\XPmachine\print$

in a cmd windows type
dir \\XPmachine\print$

If you get access denied.

stop the spooler service on the XP machine, stop sharing the print$ share
(mmc, add snapin, shared folders).

net start spooler

Wait a few minutes then check in the shared folders snapin and confirm the
print$ share was recreated. I have shared printers so if it's not recreated
reshare your printer on XP.

I don't think the network guy was saying stop sharing the printer. He
wanted to disable sharing completely then reenable. It's some network thing
but I don't know exactly what he wanted.

Hi- I wanted to take a second to jump in here too. I am experiencing the
same conditions. A new laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have a desktop with Windows XP SR2 with a printer connected to it. All my
other XP computers can connect to it and install the printer. The Vista
machine can see the printer, but will receive an error if I ry to connect to
it.

I tried a work around I found which included installing it as a local
printer. This failed also. I tried the dir \\computername\printername
command in a command window and received "not enough server storage is
available to process this command" I believe received this error also when I
tried to install the network printer as a loca printer.

I could use some advise as well. It certainly seems this would be a simple
process to handle, but with all the similar cases floating around the web, it
doesn't appear to be so. Please help if at all possible.

Thanks

Is the Guest account enabled on XP?

Anyway lets get you "connected" to the XP machine. This works around any
RPC authentication issues by utilizing the Redirector rather than the Remote
Procedure Calls
Add Printer
Local Printer
Add Local Port
the format of the port name is \\XPMACHINE\PRINTSHARE (if there are spaces
in the print share get rid of them on the XP machine)
Select the driver
Next, Next..
Print a test page.

Wait a few minutes then check in the shared folders snapin and confirm
the
print$ share was recreated. I have shared printers so if it's not
recreated
reshare your printer on XP.

I don't think the network guy was saying stop sharing the printer. He
wanted to disable sharing completely then reenable. It's some network
thing
but I don't know exactly what he wanted.

Hi,

I am having exactly the same issue and it seems there are many out
there
also in the same position.

MY Vista machine can see my printers on my XP Home desktop but will
not
alllow them to connect.

I looked at "net share print$" and I get everything I'm supposed to
apart
from any permissions.

All I get is :

Share name print$
Path c:\windows\System32\spool\drivers
Remark Printer Drivers
Maximum users No limit
Users
Caching Manual caching of documents

I have tried turning the sharing on & off on the prinetr but still
no
change.

Any ideas?

LH

:

One of the network developers had some questions

Is the customer not able to access only printer shares or both file
&
printer shares?

Also, if you want to debug the issue, you can request the customer
to
send
us the output of "net share print$". This would display permissions
associated with print$.

You could ask customer(s) to disable and enable sharing; and see if
that
helps.

I would love to know the application that changes the default
windows
settings that causes this. Normally the Vista machine can access
other
shares on XP only the spool directory has been reconfigured.

could you get me the "net share print$" information from the XP
machine?

thanks

Share name print$
Path c:\windows\System32\spool\drivers
Remark Printer Drivers
Maximum users No limit
Users
Caching Manual caching of documents
Permission Everyone, READ
BUILTIN\Administrators, FULL
BUILTIN\Power Users, FULL

The command completed successfully.

I have a peer to peer network. One computer is Vista Home Basic
while
the
other is XP home edition. When trying to install a printer on
the
xp
computer to the vista computer I get the following message:
"Cannot
conect
to
printer, Acces denied". I searched the microsoft knowledgebase
and
found a
solution, article 934643. the steps outlined to solve the problem
apply
only
to XP PRO; on XP Home, a more direct modification to the registry
would
probably be required. Anyone who has had this problem and a
solution?

If you have XP Pro you need to set the permissions on the share or on the
\windows\system32\spool\drivers folder.

I don't know how to do this on XP Home.

Pleases reread my question! I did what you said and only got part of the
information that should have printed. Once again how do I modify my xp
computer to allow my vista networked computer to print on the shared printer

I don't know how to set file security on XP home. There is probably a
security newsgroup.
