Connecting to remote drives

I have a Win 2003 server at my office with a shared drive. I sometimes work
at home with XP. I had been able to connect to the shared drive from home by
using its IP address, e.g. \\111.22.33.44.

I just changed my home internet provider from DSL to cable. Everything
works fine and I can connect to my server through ftp, http, etc. but I can
no longer connect to the server's shared drive. I'm not sure what I have to
configure. The server doesn't have a VPN setup so I don't think any major
configuration is necessary. But I'm missing a step and I can't figure out
what it is. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

It may be your cable ISP blocks the required ports as a security measure. I
know Cox HSI, my ISP, does. What ISP do you use? Have you checked with them?

Your much better off accessing the drives through a VPN or SSH tunnel.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using Charter. Their support said that they are
not blocking any ports. Funny, because my firewall is not the issue and
every other service on the server I try to use works fine. Do you know which
port I need to open for this kind of remote access? How do I detect if the
port is blocked?

I could use VPN or an SSH tunnel, but have always been worried about the
complexity of setting it up. Which is easier to do? Can you point me toward
specific links for instructions?

Thanks again,

Brian
