connecting ATA to ATA II

I have a 40 pin connection ATA drive that I couldn't seem to install in
my new Sony Desktop. The hard drive is ATA II and has a different
configuration.

Does any one know of a way to chain in the older ATA format?

laptop drives are smaller than desktop drives -- 2.5" vs. 3.5", as I recall

it's unlikely to fit physically even if you find an adapter

thanks for the help. figured I wouldn't be able to connect the drive
so I've resorted to a more time consuming way of transferring data.
