Connected but not able to get online

I am running Windows XP Home on my desktop and the Local Area Connection is
connected, but I am not able to open any webpages. I contacted my ISP and
they can't figure out what the problem is. My desktop LAN connection will
renew its IP address properly and I have tried unplugging the modem and
restarting that, tried connecting straight to modem and not using the router,
but neither of these seemed to help. I even uninstalled the network adapter
and reinstall it, but that didn't help either. When I contacted my ISP
provider they tried 'pinging' sites but that didn't work either and there
also isn't an outage in the area because I am able to connect through my
laptop. It was working properly two days ago in the morning and then stopped
working after I installed the latest Windows XP Updates.

I am using a router, but I know that is the problem because my laptop is
connected and working properly through the router.

I feel like I have tried everything that I know of, any ideas?

If you've got Xp why don't you try using Restore at a date when it was
working?

First try the System Restore to before this happened.
What Winsock:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/122928

Try this:
= Click Start >> Control panel >> Network and Internet Connections >> Double
click Network connections, then right your LAN Icon and select Properties.
On the LAN properties under General make sure the Internet Protocol TCP/IP
is selected and click Properties.
There make sure the Machine Get assigned Automatically IP address and Renter
the Encryption Key and the Network SSID then click
[OK].

= Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced.
Click on Connections tab and make sure the Connection is listed there then
click on LAN settings button and uncheck Automatically detect settings.
Click [OK] and close Hit F5 and open a run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]

Download the winsock fix from here:

Reboot your machine.
Is this connection Wired or wireless?.
HTH.

SP2 has an "improved" firewall - turn it off (at least temporarily) and see
if you have success.
