Connect Windowslive account to Windows Mail

T

t-4-2

Explain ... " All the Inbox from Windows Live went into Windows Mail... "
You don't mean messages that were ALREADY in Windows Live INBOX had
disappeared, did you ?
In any case, please do this on BOTH accounts :
Tools > Accounts > your account > Properties > Advanced
under Delivery heading, put a checkmark on " Leave a copy of messages on
server " > OK
Make sure you do the same on BOTH accounts.
What that does is, the incoming messages will appear in both account.

I itried your suggestion, Gary, but I got a message back saying the
system
could not find the SMPT (587) server , and it did not work. I just
want
to be
able to send internet material by e-mail, but Windows Mail does not
seem to
want to co-operate with my Windows Live Hotmail account. Is there an
easier
way? Regards, Bob

Use port 587 rather than port 25 for the SMTP server.

Although it accepts the newer Live.com addresses, Windows Mail's
account setup wizard is hard-coded to reject Hotmail and MSN
addresses.
To get around that, when you enter your Hotmail/MSN email address
initially,
use a fake one, such as (e-mail address removed). After the account setup is
complete,
go back and correct your email address.

windows mail? I Have been asked for server, POP3, etc which i do

G

Gary VanderMolen

The basic rule is, export from the old program, then import into the
new program.
In your Hotmail, click Options, More options, scroll down to the last item,
Export contacts. The rest should be pretty obvious.

If you upgraded your Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail, it would do
the contacts import automatically, and from then on will keep the two
sets of contacts synchronized.

B

Bob Quinn

I was encouraged to Save the contacts from Hotmail and then the Windows Mail
didn't recognize the File name. Should there be a Save step?

G

Gary VanderMolen

I just stepped through that process in my Hotmail account on the web,
and in the last step it prompted me to click Save, with the suggested
file name WLMContacts.csv. Did you not get that?
Then in Windows Mail do File, Import, Windows Contacts, select CSV,
click Import, then point it to the location of that saved file.

B

Bob Quinn

Exactly the same but it could not find the file. I could not copy the final
screen I saw which had Symantec up in the body of it and the file name on the
bottom left . The contacts will also stay in my WLM account if I am
successful in getting them imported to WM, right? Thanks. Bob

G

Gary VanderMolen

That last Save screen should have identified the folder name on your hard drive
where the .csv file was being saved.
Incidentally, your Symantec antivirus should not be involved in this process.
Symantec (Norton) antivirus is probably the worst as far as interfering with
legitimate processes.

The export process does not remove or disturb the source of the contacts.

B

Bob Quinn

I wondered about Symantec's role in this. A savvy guy told me they were the
best, and to avoid McAfee. Wonder if the file did not go to the right place.
Should it be right on the C hard drive with my other documents or a separate
area? It is in a recently changed section. Should I do something to get
Symantec out of there?

S

Sam Hobbs

If you search this newsgroup for Norton or Symantec you will find many
messages, all unfavorable or nearly all unfavorable

Peter Norton was a pioneer of PC software. Your "savvy guy" might base his
opinion on Peter Norton's reputation, or it might be based on marketing. The
Peter Norton reputation appears to be the primary thing keeping the Symantec
company going.

The Symantec company will likely wake up eventually, after it is too late,
and improve their software. It will require many years for them to overcome
the bad reputation they are developing, just as the good reputation of Peter
Norton persists for many years.

B

Bob Quinn

What anti-virus product do you recommend/use?

Sam Hobbs said:

To find the missing file (assuming it was saved), click Start, then type
WLMContacts.csv
which should bring up a list of matching files. Right-click on the file name,
select Open file location.

B

Bob Quinn

It opened into Excel. I'd done this before. Namebox says A1. Bottom left says
WLM Contacts.

S

Sam Hobbs

I use avast, as in:
http://www.avast.com
It is available for free for personal use. I have had no problem with it and
I assume it is working. There are others for free that are also good.

Oh, one of them is Comodo, as in the following. I have heard that it is good
but I don't know the details. When I was looking for a free AV program that
used minimal resources, I tried to use Comodo but I think it did not work
with Vista at the time.
http://www.comodo.com

Also see:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-anti-virus-software.htm

A good antivirus program is worth paying for but I don't know which are
better. There are rumors that Microsoft will be offering an AV program but I
don't know the details.

G

Gary VanderMolen

So, the WLMContacts.csv file does exist and you now know its location.
Are all the columns present, like First name, Last Name, etc.?
If yes, you can import it into Windows Mail now.

B

Bob Quinn

First name, last name, e-mail address are in place, but, Windows Mail has
been unable to find it.
Where do you put in the location? I've been putting in the name, and the csv
doesn't stay with it.

B

Bob Quinn

Messed around, got it to work. Hard Drive had several sections. Had to pick
the one the list was in, not the one a Saved document from Symantec was in.
Should it, the update, happen automatically from now on?

G

Gary VanderMolen

No, it's a one-shot deal for Windows Mail.
Only the newer Windows Live Mail can keep its contacts constantly
synchronized with your Hotmail contacts. That's one major selling point
that made me switch; not because I use Hotmail but because I like
having an automatic, up-to-date backup of my contacts.
