Confusion reigns!

Efficiency rears its ugly head and the call it..WINDOWS XP!

In my MSCONFIG, my SYMANTEC ANTI VIRUS PROGRAM is listed and CHECKED,
(among two or three other items...my ISP, and GO BACK, etc.

Yet every time I look in the Systm Tray, it shows a RED X, indicating
that my Symantec program is not activated.

SO, every time I boot up WIN XP HONE EDITION, I have to manually click
the icon in the systray, bring up the program and close it down. That
takes away the red X.

QUESTION: What can I do to assure that the AV program is activated
without doing it manually.

No big prob...just a CPA. (constant pain in the duppa)/

Likely, the Symantec services aren't starting properly or in the
correct order for the real-time agent to be active. Not an easy
problem to resolve. Best to check System & Application logs
looking for Red icons, that denote errors.

Running NAV is the software equivalent of a Jig-Saw puzzle.
It requires all manner of services and dependencies to startup
correctly, or you'll see the condition you're experiencing.

Which version of NAV are you running, and was it recently
upgraded or a new yearly subscription applied ?

I believe I'm running the latest version, to expire this July 2005. All
my updates are up-to-date as well.

Believe me when I say I'm one lucky guy; I don't have 1/10th of the
problems I read about on this group. Maybe I should be tickled pink to
be able to activate my Symantec every time I go online.

Thanks MR Mc!

Neither do I, but I don't believe luck has anything to do
with it in any case.

To be fair to Symantec, there are lots of instances where Nav
or whatever works fine - installing, running & updating. The big
issues seem to appear in updates and removing older versions.
These upgrade issues aren't isolated cases, they seem to occur
in a high % of Symantec upgrades/subscription renewals.

However, I still maintain that the software is very resource hungry
and somewhat bloated - compared to other similar products.
Just this morning, I received some feedback from a customer
that had his yearly "Clean & Tweak" service done recently. We
removed NIS-2004 and replaced it with eTrust/ZA Free. To
quote him "I'm really pleased with eTrust, all the PCs run much
better than before".
