when starting a ms-dos program i get a config.sys error
message saying make Files=120. How do I do that

Hi

config.sys isn't used in XP. Try config.nt instead. Start>Run - then type in "%systemroot%\system32\config.nt" - without the quotes.

Add the entry to the config.nt file in the c:\windows\system32 folder.

Do it by modifying the files= line at the end of
windows\system32\config.nt (edit with Notepad)

You *may* still get an error if the program itself is looking in the
C:\config.sys. This is present in XP, but normally contains nothing.
You would need to have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files,
and *not* Hide Protected mode ones, then edit it with NotePad
