Hello!
How to see my second computer in my home network, when I select in the
"Network setup Wizard" the "This computer connects directly to the Internet.
The other computers on my network connect to the Internet through this
computer" on one computer, and "This computer connects to the Internet
through another computer on my network" on the other? The computers see each
other in the "View workgroup computers" and only one computer can connect to
the Internet, when I select the "This computer belongs to a network that does
not have an Internet connection" on my both computers.
My both computers are connected to my Switch. The Switch is connected to my
residential network http://www.globonet.ru/settings, through which I connect
one of the computers to the Internet.
Best regards,
Dima

Dima,

Please identify, by name, which computer connects directly to the Internet, and
how. The first scenario,
"This computer connects directly to the Internet.
The other computers on my network connect to the Internet through this
computer" on one computer, and "This computer connects to the Internet
through another computer on my network" on the other
is most likely correct, but it depends upon the physical cabling.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/connecting-two-computers-with.html

After repeating the first scenario, let's look at "browstat status" and
"ipconfig /all", from each computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Dima,

OK, A is running a WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface. How does the Realtek RTL8139/810x
on A connect to the D-Link DUB-E100 on D? Is this where the switch comes into
play? What is 10.24.255.5? That's your problem. With A running ICS and DHCP,
and D getting DHCP settings from 10.24.255.5, your 2 computers are on separate
subnets. What else is connected to the switch? Start there.

Yes, the Realtek RTL8139/810x on A connects to the D-Link DUB-E100 on D
through my home switch. I don't know what the 10.24.255.5 is. I and any other
people did not set any IP on my side. My Switch is connected through its
Uplink port to our residential LAN for the Internet connection. What else to
write about my configuration?

Dima

OK, Dima, I think I'm getting the picture.

You have computers A and D, connected thru a switch (make / model?) to a
residential LAN. A is connected to the Internet by dialup / PPPoE (PPP/SLIP).
The residential LAN doesn't provide Internet service (??), so you're trying to
share service on A with D. Unfortunately, D is getting DHCP settings from
something on the residential LAN. The DHCP server on the residential LAN is
interfering with the settings provided by the DHCP / ICS server on A, preventing
A and D from seeing each other.
1) Replace the switch with a router, but one that does NOT run NAT. ICS on A is
a NAT router.
2) Disconnect from the residential LAN altogether.
3) Give D a fixed IP setup of 192.168.0.2, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.1,
212.1.224.34, 212.1.230.111.

You're leaving a lot of unanswered questions.
a) What is the purpose of this residential LAN?
b) Does D have Internet service, when using the "This computer connects to the
Internet through another computer on my network" setup?
c) If #2 is "Yes", then does it have service if you turn A off?
d) If you try solution 3, what happens to the other computers on the LAN?

We really need a good answer to what the residential LAN is used for.

Thanks Chuck for your sympathizing reply!
The switch make is 3com, model is OfficeConnect 8.
A is connected to the Internet through the residential LAN. The residential
LAN does provide Internet service. I'm trying to share the service on A with
D.
The purpose of this residential LAN is the Internet connection and free
local resources.
D does not have Internet service, when using the "This computer connects to
the
Internet through another computer on my network" setup - ICS does not work.
It does not have ICS service if I turn A off. It can connect, however, to
the Internet with the same as at A settings when the Internet connection at A
is disconnected.
I will try solution 3 in 4 hours.

Dima

Dima,

If the residential LAN does provide Internet service, why do you need A
accessing the Internet separately?

If you setup A on the residential LAN, providing Internet service (DHCP / ICS),
eventually one of the other computers on the LAN is going to get DHCP settings
from A. That computer will be accessing the Internet thru A, and won't be able
to access the free local resources, as it will be on the 192.168.0/24 subnet
with A, not on 10.24.20.0/22 with the free resources.

When that happens, you'll be running a rogue DHCP server on the LAN.
Eventually, when one of the other LAN residents complains about lack of
connectivity with the free local resources, the LAN admin will locate A and
disconnect it from the LAN.

Best you decide now exactly what you're trying to do here.

The free files are in the LAN's peer-to-peer network.
I have only two computers: A and D. What did you mean D by ""one of the

That changes things.

If you have A on the LAN with the other computers, and A is running DHCP / ICS,
one day when one of the other computers requests DHCP services, A will respond
before the official DHCP server 10.24.255.5. A will provide an address
assignment on 192.168.0/24, to one of the LAN computers. This will cause
problems on the LAN, and eventually, the LAN admin will disconnect A as it will
be a rogue DHCP server.

So lets look at the other possibility. Run the NSW on A and on D, and select
"This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network"
on BOTH A and D.

Chuck, you were right that our LAN interfered in A and D connection! I got A
and D see each other and ICS on A, after disconnecting our LAN's cable from
my switch for the duration of the NSW. The NSW tried to connect to the
Internet and could not, after my choosing an Internet connection in the NSW.
I had to wait several hours for the NSW to complete its last step with the
copying. How to make the NSW complete faster a next time?
All LAN's users have to enter a username and a password to connect to the
Internet through our LAN. My computer A will not accept such a connection
with a username and a password.
Is the ICS given to computers of my workgroup only, not every computer on
our LAN? I gave a unique name to my workgroup - kopn.
Best regards,
Dima

Dima,

Run the NSW as specified, and forget about ICS. A and D will be DHCP clients,
and use 10.24.23.254 as the Internet gateway.

If the Realtek RTL8139/810x on A is used as the Internet source, it can't be
used to share service to D also. To use A as an ICS server for D, you'll have
to add a second network adapter. That's the only way that you'll be able to
have A and D accessing the Internet thru the Realtek RTL8139/810x on A, and
remain connected to the residential LAN, without causing trouble.

Dear Chuck,
I'm trying to give D access to the Internet through A because I have only
one our LAN's username and a password.

If that's the case, Dima, then you'll have to add a second network adapter in A,
and put D on a separate LAN below A. You can't have both connected directly to
the residential LAN, and have D getting service thru A, without causing trouble.
See my immediately previous reply.

Our LAN requires a username and a password to give the Internet access. I
have only one username and password. A and D can not connect to the Internet
with the same username and password at the same time.
Why will A provide an address assignment on 192.168.0/24, to one of the LAN
computers, if LAN computers are setup to provide a username and password to
connect to a server? Does A provide an address assignment to kopn workgroup
computers only?
I made D connct to the Internet through A, and A and D see each other by
disconnecting our LAN's cable from my switch for the duration of the NSW. The
NSW tried to connect to our LAN, but could not, after my choosing an Internet

Why do you write that D is connected directly to the residential LAN? D does
not have a unique username and password to connect to the LAN. D is setup by
the NSW to connect to the Internet through A in the same workgroup kopn.
