Computer won't boot - keeps restarting after "last known config" s

My computer won't actually fully boot at all. It gets to a screen that has
the options: safe mode, boot using last known good configuration, boot
normally, etc, but when you press any of those options, the computer just
restarts and goes back to that screen.

I don't have a windows XP disc. Is there a way if I need to, to buy a copy
of windows XP and fix/repair whatever needs to be repaired, without totally
wiping my C drive? Does anyone know what this problem is, or how to fix it?
thanks!

Hi

I had a very similar problem. Couldn't even system restore or load in safe
mode, so you may need to do what I did which was a repair install or inplace
upgrade. If you google them, there are good step by step guides out there.

These options wont delete anything on your hard drive and should just
replace the windows components that are faulty at present.

Hope this helps.

Yes buying a Windows XP copy and using repair would likely work. But
what about using safe mode and System Restore first? Oh you tried this
too?

It won't help now, but in the future, I suggest using BartPE (which
makes a Windows XP Lite version of CD and ERUNT (both free). And you
should be able to fix these kinds of problems without any problems.

You will need to get the same version that is installed on your pc, ie Home
OEM XP, or Retail, upgrade etc. whatever version is currently installed needs
to be matched with the repair.

Just out of curiosity may I ask you which Registry Cleaning tool did you use when your computer was running correctly.

I have the same problem about twice a year.
I tried everything that everbody suggested.
The only thing that helped (in my case),
was reseating the memory modules.
Turn off the power to your computer, open the case,
take out the ram modules and snap them back in a
couple of times. (gets rid of any oxide buildup)
Even if ram modules are gold plated, the motherboard receptacles
might not be.

Yes very good tip. Clean pencil erasers work well on the contacts on the
RAM side. Don't try to use the eraser in the socket side. Ethanol works
well too with a Q-Tip. Make sure everything is dry before you power up
again.

Hmmm... Like Jerry Ed said, it could be a poor RAM contact. But it could
be a lot of other things too. Like power supply problems, weak fan,
flaky HD, etc. What is the make and model? Is it a desktop or a laptop?
