Hi All.
My Windows vista will not BOOT even in SAFE MODE. I install RecordNow and
when I rebooted the computer it stop working. I click on the Safe Mode, Safe
Mode with Networking, safe mode command prompt and when the computer starts,
It only says on all the 4 sides SAFE MODE but the screen is dark. I can use
the mouse but I dont see anything else. Does anybody know how I can
uninstall that software? Thank You.

Hi,

Hit ctrl+shift+escape to see if you can get task manager. If so, on the
applications tab click 'new task' and enter 'control appwiz.cpl' to open the
add/remove dialog. This should allow you to uninstall the software.

It does not let do anything after using the Ctrl+Shift+Esc. I tryed using

Any other suggestions?

Thank You.

Do you think you could be a little more helpful. Nobody is going to be able
to help from here unless you provide information. WHAT came back as an
error. The restore or the reboot after the restore? What was your error
message and codes. Which version of Vista 86 or 64? and is it RC1, RTM,
etc.
Once on a failed install I had an unsigned driver get installed that
prevented the boot until I removed it.

Ok, here is what happen:
Using: Windows Vista RC1 32-bit (x86)
1) I install RecordNow v.5.1
2) I rebooted the computer and I got BLUE SCREEN that says: BAD_POOL_CALLER
3) The computer Rebooted and It came me option to choose this:
SAFE MODE
SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT
START WINDOWS NORMALLY
4) I have choosen all of the options above and none have worked.
5) I download "Windows Memory Diagnostic supports x86-based" and it found no
problems.
6) I put the Windows Vista DVD and rebooted it with that.
7) I choose RESTORE to an earlier time and this is what I got.
Details:
System Restore failed due to an unspecified error.
The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)
8) I choose again the SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING when I rebooted.
9) The computer turn on with SAFE MODE on all corners, but everything esle
is black. I can see and move the mouse but thats all the computer will let me
do.

Please let me know what to do. I want to go into the computer, back up what
I need and then I'm going to format my drive and install my WindowsXP pro
instead. I hate Windows Vista. Nothing but problems since I started to use
it. And most of my software that I use, does not work with that edition.
Thank you for all of your help.

Hi,

The installation is seriously damaged, and if you cannot even access it
under 'safe mode with command prompt', recovery is unlikely. Pull the drive
and slave it in another machine, recover what data you want to save. Then
reinsert it in the original machine, format and reinstall XP, Vista, or
whatever OS you choose. This happens sometimes with prerelease software, and
you should never keep data on it that you aren't willing to part with.
Fortunately, you should be able to recover it.

When the system starts up, hit the f8 key and with luck you will be offered
the option to start with the last known good registry.

Failing that it looks like you are going to have several choices. Identify
the driver installed by your program and delete it. Install XP on another
partition and retrieve your data, then you can delete the Vista Partition.
Restore your registry manually. If the program adds any services, you can
disable them and see if you then can get into safe mode to remove the
program. I don't know the program so you are going to have to do the
research about the last item. Maybe you could check startup services on
another machine you have it installed on to see if any are related to this
program.

When you run safe mode, while it is loading the drivers etc. it usually
lists the items as they are being loaded. Do you get this list and what is
the last item on the list.

I haven't done either of the last two with Vista, but you could try with the
XP instructions. If you have everything you want to backup is in a couple
of locations, you could use the Recovery Console or a DOS program to make
your copies if you have an accessible area to store them.

Good luck.

If the f8 key doesn't give you the choice of last good, then Rick's
suggestion is a good next try if available.

Hello,
I had the same problem when I installed RecordNow ver.7 on my Sony laptop.
My problem was caused by a .sys file. The name of my problem file was the
ssrtln.sys file located in the C:\Windows\System32 file folder. I just
renamed the file and rebooted and uninstalled RecordNow.....you don't really
need it in Vista. There is also supposed to be a fix for this on RecordNow's
website but I never could find it.
You will have to be able to boot off of a boot disk if you can't get to safe
mode screen. I used a Windows XP boot disk (floppy) and went to the system32
folder and renamed the file....you could delete it also.
Good luck,
Craig

This is where the computer STOPS for a while when loading the SAFE MODE files.

it reads like this:

\windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

Now how can I DELETE this file or rename it?

I do have a bootable win98 disk. Will this one work? And if it does, I
dont know how to delete or rename anything in DOS mode. Can someone show me
how? The only think i have done with that floppy is to get to the A:\ Thank
You.

J

John Barnes

At the A prompt you need to del or delete then the complete file name
C:\with the info you have in your post. Check that your vista system is C
by doing a map command at the A prompt first. I don't remember if DOS
recognises capital letters but del
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

It stops on the last good file, not the one that is causing the problem.

In Vista, with a perfectly good installation, with absolutely no problems at
all, a boot into Safe Mode will ALWAYS list crcdisk.sys as the last file
loaded. The OP's problem is not with any of the drivers that are enumerated
in Safe Mode.

J

John Barnes

Edgar, I failed to look back to the post from Craig and thought you named
was the same file. The file you need to delete ssrtln.sys in the same
location.
Follow my previous instructions on format and delete the ssrtln.sys in the
same location

I deleted the crcdisk.sys file. Now do I need it? I dont know how to
UNDELETE it.
Thank You.

After deleting the crc file, still did the same thing. The computer starts
but it stays all in black and I can see on the bottom right corner that says:
WINDOWS VISTA (TM) RC1 EVALUATION COPY. BUILD 5600 and the Mouse. But
that is it.
Thank You.

Sorry Edgar, you don't say whether you removed the offending file as well,
but to replace the crcdisk.sys file the safest way I know of would be with a
REPAIR install. Since Vista install is different from prior versions you
can no longer just go to the install disk and extract the file. Maybe Colin
or Jane can offer a cleaner way to recover the file. I haven't used the
repair tools of Vista, so I don't know if there is a way to extract a file
or run a tool like System File Checker from the install disk. Just make
sure you do a repair and NOT a full install so you don't lose any of your
files.
