Computer shows flickering blue screen after shutdown

I am using a HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop running Vista Home Premium. When I try
to shut it down, it shows me the infamous blue screen of death, but with a
twist. The error message is flickering, preventing me to find out why this
happens. This only happens when I am running on battery power. If I am
running on AC power when I shutdown, this problem doesn't happen. Can anyone
help?

This may not be the problem...
But I would suspect that on battery power you do not have full function of
your video. May be a power saving feature. Hence the flickering. On battery
the laptop shuts down things to conserve. This might cause a bad shutdown
since Vista is strongly hardware aware.

Thank you for the help! The idea that a power saving feature fixed my
problem. It seemed that the "USB selective suspend setting" was enabled when
on battery power and disabled when on AC power. After turning it off for
battery power, I attempted a shutdown and everything worked fine. Thanks
again!
