Yeh, there are lots of things that can make your pc slow. If you have a pent
d or 4, the ram speed can be boosted in the cmos. If you have 2 or more
antivirus's, they can slow your machine. If you have a highly defragmented
hd, this can slow your pc down. If you registry is defragmented or
overbloated, this can slow your system down. If your swap file is turned off
or the auto settings are way off, then this can slow your pc down......If you
have a bunch of spywares, then they are using up all your resources by trying
to transmit to their home base every key you have pressed, every website you
visited, etc......And the list can go on n on n on......

As previously suggested, just disaabling all your startups in the msconfig
and releasing the tied up memory will give you a better foot hold of the
problem. Then I would suggest that you download a trial program called
system mechanic. It is not the best, but it is better than not having
nothing at all. And buying a program like this or something similar would
not be a bad idea at all. Run the mechanic and it will begin cleaning up the
hd & registry, defraging, removing bad files, spywares,...etc.

PS: As a safety net, go ahead a make a manual restore point. Make one
before altering the msconfig. Make another after rebooting and again make
another b4 downloading system mechanic. Its better to be on the safe side -
like insurance.
