I noticed something interesting

in computer managment/performance logs and alerts/alerts

it appears that you can set up an alert to run a program.

has anyone used this facility? I'd like to use it to say run a program
if a mail message is received on the pc.

This is for to notify someone about that a system value on the
computer is not ok. That means, you can set up an alert for the case
that the swapfile extends a specific size or the processor usage rises
over a given value. Since incoming mail is no critical system state,
you cannoit set up such an alert here.
Better mail clients may be able to run a program like a virus scanner
whenever new mail arrives.
