Computer is seen on the network, but can't access it!

I can't figure this out. I have three computers connected together like this:

All computers run XP Pro

C1, C2 and C3 are connected to a gigabit switch, the switch is connected to
a router, and the router is connected to the DSL modem.

The DSL modem supplies the IP addresses for each computer.

The problem is this, C2 can access C3 and C1 on the network by browsing the
network. When I browse the network on C1 or C3, I can see C2, but when I
click on them to view the contents I get the "\\C2 is not accessible. You may
not have permission to access these resources" error message.

The funny thing is I used to be able to connect. I don't know what happend.

All three computers can access the internet.

When I ping, I can ping C2 to C1 and C3, and from C1 to C3, but not C1 and
C3 to C2.

So, why can't I access C2?! I have allowed print and file sharing, I have
changed the WINS to allow NETBIOS over TCP. I can't figure this out. Any
help is greatly appreciated.

When you shared a folder or disk on C2, what permissions did you use?
Everyone? Administrators?

I'm also wondering what your maximum number of users is. I think the
default is 10.

On C1, if you start up a command prompt, what do you get when you type
Net use Z: \\C2\<diskToShareInFirstParagraph> ?

What about when you type
Net use Z: \\C2\<diskToShareInFirstParagraph> /user:<UserNameOnC2> ?

The ping problem is a good place to start here.

Pinging is pretty low level; there are just a few things that could cause ping
to return "timed out" (is that what you're seeing?).

I have exactly the same problem (give or take) and I've had it before. This
time C2 will allow me to access the "shared folders" as defined by XP, but
not the other folders I have shared manually. It was all working a week ago,
and no settings have been changed manually. Clearly there is no layer 3
problem here.
Last time I reinstalled XP (on C1) to fix the problem (which was on C1 last
time). This is obviously not the optimum solution.

I have seen multiple reports of this sort of thing in various places, but
have yet to see a solution that doesn't involved re-installing the OS.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? All software firewalls are disabled.

Thanks,
Ariane

This problem does not sound like a network issue but a permission issue since
you can see all of the machines. Set up a user on all machine with the same
name and password and rights to the shares. It is important that the password
not be blank. Admin account will work as long as the password is identical on
all machines.

Rajah, Chuck, Thanks for you your help. I just wanted to let you all know
what the problem was.

After days of searching sites, reading books, re-configuring network
settings, the culprit was the G*& D() Mcafee Anti-Virus software on C2. It
must have automatically configured a firewall against C1 and C3. That is why
I was able to connect the first couple days and then it stop for no reason.
I hate that software. If it wasn't my wifes computer, I would remove it.

Thanks again all, and to anyone who reads this thread with a similar
problem, double check ALL firewall settings, not just the XP firewall. (now
I need a drink..)

Thanks for the update. Misbehaving personal firewalls are the most common
problem reported here.
