Computer has slowed to a crawl recently

Hi group,

We have a two year old HP Pavillion with Intel 1.1 GHz
Celeron processor, 128 MB RAM, 40 MB hard drive, and XP
Home Edition.

It's been great, but just within the last few weeks it's
been running really, really, really slowly .... taking way
too long to open programs, run applications, and other
things.

This past weekend, I attempted to install Microsoft
Updates .... and found that the computer took over 90
minutes to install several updates (IE, Media Player, and
a couple of others).

I've just recently installed SpyHunter, and found 204
instances of spyware called BackWeb, which is described as
something the manufacturer could have put there to check
on updates .... does this sound reasonable, or is it
bogus????

Any ideas????

Sounds like you have a virus. I had the exact same
problem and after an hour on the phone with MS tech
support and $35 smackers later they decided I had a virus
and I had to reinstall XP. It fixed the problem but even
reformatting and reinstalling to about 12 hours...after
it was installed and rebooted it was back to it's normal
1.5 Ghz speed.
Hope your not in the same boat, I lost a lot of important
stuff.

I'm having the similar problem - seems I have to cntl alt
del after each command - mouse or keyboard - when I do the
task manager comes to life and in a couple osecs the
command is executed - beats me.

I highly recommend the two programs referred to below (SpyBot and AdAware)
I've already had two friends with similar problems (very slow or crashing
PCs running windows 98 and XP). Installing and running these programs (spy
ware scanners and cleaner programs) resolved their problems without having
to format and reinstall Windows onto their machines.

| Check out these two free programs,
| Spybot Search and Destroy [free]
|
| Ad Aware: [free]

|
| Both programs need to be updated after you
| install them.
| Good Luck,
| Tom
