computer freezes.

When I reboot the computer runs fine for about 10-15 minutes either in local
svc or internet connection. Then it slows to a crawl and then freezes with
the houirglass pointer able to move but not able to connect to a new screen.

I'm not sure I'm explaining this situation correctly but I thgen have to
reboot and start the cycle all over again. It is very frustrating.

I'm not exactly asking for a solution here just a way of checking it out and
perhaps finding the solution.

Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

(The screen is slowing down right now.)

I'm running XP prof - SP2.

You can make a start by pressing ctrl+alt+del to get up Windows Task
Manager. Click on the Performance tab and watch the CPU Usage. If that
starts to rise, click on the Processes tab and identify which process
is taking all your resources.

You can also monitor your CPU temperature with many of the free
programs available. High core temps will cause freezing.

Lastly, run both spyware and ani-virus programs to eliminate a cause
there.

Thanks, You've sent me in the right direction. I need more help.

The task manager shows me a program called "vsmon.exe" taking over 23000 kgs
usage. And explorer also take up to 35000 usage.

The rest are low figures.

CPU usage for a time is 6-7 pct then suddenly spikes to 100 pct and stays
there and the machine freezes.

This happens no matter where I'm working. This, of course means, that
something is running in the background that suddenly uses up all the chip
resources and freezes the computer for a while. Something it comes back
sometimes not.

I think this all happened after I added windows defender and removed it
evidentially not completely that may still be a files running in the
background that is causing this but how can I find it? That's my problem.

This file vsmon is not in the system32 directory.

I'm going to try to end the process and see what that does.

Let me know of any suggestions you have.

Werner

A further report. I'm running Task manager and it has opened a whole new
world for me. It is showing what processes are using cpu space.

The "system idle process" seems to be using 99% of cpu space all the time.
Where do I find it and how can I get it down in system usage?

You help has been great and I need to pick your brain just a bit more.

Thanks.

System Idle Process is normal and so is vsmon.exe (part of Zone
alarm). But if your CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there, this is
the problem.

Could be an overheating CPU or a faulty CPU or Motherboard. If you
don't feel confident checking these out, take it to a professional.
Good luck.

Thanks for all your help.

I know it was not CPU overheating as I checked that.

It turns out that the problem started after I installed the Beta 2 version
of Windows Defender which would not run correctly for me so I uninstalled
it. I removed all the pieces including registry entries. However the bugs in
the program caused a corruption in My Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
Mainly the problem of freezing showed up every time we used either program.
This of course irked my wife who uses those two programs all the time.

The solution came when I reinstalled (repaired) these two and has not
recurred.

Your help in explaining to me the proper use of Task Manager showed me how
to troubleshoot the problem and I've been running the Manager continuously
since then.

The help that I find on these newsgroups and by the gurus like yourself make
using a computer much more pleasurable and useful.

Many, Many thanks

Best regards,

Werner

Now that I know where to look for problems I'm becoming a fanatic about it.

I found another problem which MS recognizes but since I am using my OEM
version of MS XP Prof Sp2 they won't help me free of charge.

In Task manager I'm finding that a bug in a system32 file "Cisvc.exe" is
running on 100% of the computer effectively locking it up.

I found the file in 3 places within system32.

When I close the file in Task Manager" the system unlocks and lets me work
again without rebooting.

What does this file do? And by closing it am I creating a different problem?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Regards,

Werner
