Computer Doesn't Recognize New Hp 5600 Series Printer

I have recently installed a HP 5650 Printer on my Windows XP system. All printing functions work fine except when I attempt to print a document prepared in Microsoft Works Spreadsheet, and saved on harddrive.

When I click Print Preview", I receive the following message: "The printer driver is missing or not valid. Run the Windows set up program program to install the printer software again" I have done 3 times with no success.

When I click Print, I receive the following message: "No default printer selected. Use the Windows Control Panel to specify your printer". The 5650 is the only printer appearing in the Control Panel.

I have been exchanging e-mails for 2 days with the techs at HP, and have done step after step of supposed fixes, to no avail. They have now said that they can't help me any further, that I should contact Microsoft for assistance.

Cab anybody help?

I have recently installed a HP 5650 Printer on my Windows XP system.

FIRST, look in your Startup folder. Did the printer driver that came
on CD insert anything there? I bet it did and I bet that there's also
an icon in your system tray (by the clock). First delete that entry
from the Startup folder and reboot so that the tray icon goes away.
You really don't need that crap anyway and I'm surprised that HP ships
their printers with it.

Then, I suggest that you add the HP printer using the printer folder's
"Add Printer" feature -- DO NOT use the cd driver disk that came with
your HP. When adding a printer this way there will probably be a
listing for your HP model in the drop down list.

Now set that new printer as the default printer AND when you are in
your program make sure that that new printer is the one you've
selected.
