Complete loss of network connections

On Saturday, I lost all connections to my modem. I am currently using Time
Warner as my ISP and thier tech people told me that I had lost communications
with my NIC. I went into my device manager and disabled the current NIC, went
out and purchased a new wireless adapter. I installed it and for a moment had
regained access to my network. However, I now have no access again. I tried
to run the wireless repair function within XP to no avail. I continue to get
a "unable to renew ip address error. In my wireless adapter software, I have
a red 'X" on the connection between my router and my modem as well as
between my desktop and the router. I have enough knowledge to make myself
dangerous. Shoudl I install WZC and let windows run this or could the problem
really lie in the modem and not my NIC or wireless adapter?

I would use WZC.

Something else is at fault since two adapters (wireless and NIC) both
fail to connect to the router/internet.

You need to check for any/all possible spyware / virus infestations
and clean all that are found. Then, you need to rebult the TCP/IP
protocol stack (I use "winsockxpfix.exe.)

To try and narrow the problem down try connecting your desktop directly to
the modem via cat5 cable. Shut down the computer and power off the modem.
Power on the modem and wait to it to synch with the cable company so that
the usual four lights are solid. Start the computer and see if you have
internet access. If you do the problem is with the router. If you have not
tried yet simply power down your router for 10 seconds or so and power up
again.
