Lets see 10 year old software, what is that in computer years? (hint: old
very very old)

Frankly I would say "not". I would also suggest that whether you like it or
not Carey's advice is essentially correct - Office 97 is so obsolete that
whether it will work or not one should not even be considering its use any
longer.

Wasn't Office 97 designed for Win95? What version of Windows are you using?
Why don't you try the preview of Office2007? I like it now that I am more
used to it; it will be a shock to you, though. But, you have to have
Win2000 or WinXP to use it.

Why should they replace it if it works & dose the job.

Unless there giving away Free upgrades, if it works & runs, keep using it.

I understand your frustration, and I wish that I knew the answer (and
while we are at it, might as well answer the question for Windows 2000,
XP and 2003 at the same time).

While I agree that Office 97 is so old that it generally should be
abandoned in favor of a newer version, it is still a legitimate question
and deserves a yes or no answer. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer
or I'd give it to you.

Probably yes. I say that based on my experience of installing software
that I used on Win95 and it works perfectly in Vista RC2 both x86 & x64.

'Compatible' may mean different things to different people. Why not
suck it and see?

- Security holes
- Document incompatibilities
- Incomplete featuresets

Yes, but newer 3rd party apps are smart enough to reduce support/development
costs by avoiding the restrictions of VBA in Office 97. So one might run
into trouble adding newer 3rd party apps that interact with Office.

Office 97 is based on VBA 5, Office 2000, XP and 2003 are based on the more
powerful VBA 6.

I always try to talk clients out of paying me to develop for Office 97.
It's less expensive to ignore Office 97 in macro development.

Why don't you install it yourself, and see? Get a copy of the Vista RC2,
install it onto a VPC 2007 machine, and have at it. Post back when you find
out.

All I can say is "Give it a try and see what she does."

The bottom line is that yes, it is a 10 year old program. You have a 50/50
chance. It may, it may not. I will say, however, that you may want to look at
an upgrade to a newer office program. Wish I could be more help.

I have no idea. But being a "common sense' kinda guy, I'd say the
chances of Office 97 (which ran on Windows 95, btw) being compatible
with Vista are equal to or less than:

A SNOWBALL's CHANCE IN HELL.

If you really feel that way then why are you here? I don't know about
you, but I'm testing/trying out Vista with the idea of purchasing it
later on.

I do have Windows XP. XP works and "dose [sic] the job".

But I want more.

If not and you don't wanna upgrade, you could always use OpenOffice.org.
It's newer and free.

Well Office97 seemed to be a well written piece of software that
used the windows programming conventions well and thus ran on win32
platforms without real problems. Of course the Excel 97 macros and
so on are a bit out of date, but you can still do good things with
it (as you can with Office 4.3 BTW). Most of the so-called
improvements of later versions are dubious at best, later versions
of Office seem to be able to open earlier version files, so there's
no compelling reason to upgrade. Free viewers enable one to read and
print files from the later versions (they work on vista).
