Coming to terms with Win XP after using Win 98

AL D

No doubt there must be benefits in using Windows XP over Windows 98...
apart from being easier to shut down... but I seem to be finding a lot
of DISadvantages so far...

Does anyone know of a website whose theme is: Things people hate about
Windows XP and how to overcome them?

Some things I would like XP to do:

1) be able to drag an .exe file from filing cabinet onto the desktop,
and have the resulting desktop icon actually execute its programwhen I
click on it (in all cases).

2) set the filing cabinet to display files as list, with details, by
default every time..

3) Have those details include the file extension.

Thanks,

Al D

I can assure you will get to love XP if only for RESTORE.

put this one into favourites, www.theeldergeek.com

1. Right mouse, new shortcut.

2 + 3. File settings.

work with it and the help section and all will become clear.

I found the same thing and was glad to revert to Windows 2000 where I am in
control.

Some things I would like XP to do:

1) be able to drag an .exe file from filing cabinet onto the desktop,
and have the resulting desktop icon actually execute its programwhen I
click on it (in all cases).

Right click on the original file, select copy. Right click wherever you
want the ICON and select "Paste Shortcut."

Or, drag and drop holding down the ALT key (SHIFT for move, CONTROL for
copy). You'll see the arrow denoting it's going to be a shortcut (nothing
for MOVE, a + for COPY)
2) set the filing cabinet to display files as list, with details, by
default every time..

Open a folder in Windows Explorer and select the view you want then open
TOOLS/FOLDER OPTIONS from the Windows Explorer menu bar. Pick the view tab
and press "Apply to All Folders." All folders will then open with that view
setting.
3) Have those details include the file extension.

Open TOOLS/FOLDER OPTIONS, as above, but in the VIEW section's "Advanced
settings" window uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" box.

There are a number of 'view' options in there you may be interested in as well.

I suspected those things might be possible, if one only knew how.
Thank you so much!

I feel a bit ashamed now for not having more faith in the great god
MS, and not delving into the help file... :)

someone bought the XP Home upgrade from 98SE for me and it sat in the drawer
for 3 months. That was the stupidest 3 months I have spent computing.
Putting up with all those 98 BSD's and memory problems.

The day I loaded XP was the day I've never looked back. A great OS.

Mind you some will say otherwise.......I suspect.

As Dr. McCoy lamented "engineers love to change things" and MS is no
different. You just have to find the new hiding place.

Being able to shut down is a real benefit. The system not freezing
up is a major benefit. Being able to run lots of applications of the
same time without worrying about memory problems is relatively very
nice.

Like the massive amount of junk it dumps on your hard drive without
asking you about installation options. Windows Product Activation
sucks too.

But comparing Windows XP to prior versions of Windows (given the
workarounds for WPA), it's relative bliss. The big antitrust trial
probably had something to do with Microsoft blessing us with a half
decent operating system.

I am pretty sure XP came out long before the anti trust suit.

In fact, the big antitrust trial was well underway before Windows XP
came out.

If you go all the way back, then, we are talking about Windows 95 rather
than XP. But the court action had nothing to do with XP. It was about the IE
browser and Java.

The suit might have had something to do with how XP was packaged, but I dare
say that MS would have come out with this great OS regardless of the suit.
If anything, the court action hindered or scaled down MS plans.

I suspect you are fishing for information... here you go.

The original antitrust complaint, May 18, 1998.

http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/f1700/1763.htm

The district court's Findings of Fact, November 5, 1999.

http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/f3800/msjudgex.htm

Conclusions of Law and Final Order, April 3, 2000

http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/f4400/4469.htm

Microsoft was able to extend the case and wiggle its way out of
serious trouble, but the heat was on.

Almost 2 years later, Windows XP was released, October 25th, 2001.

I am sorry if I made your argument look bad and I am sorry if I offended
your immature sensitivities. I understand some people just have trouble
putting together convincing and valid arguments.

I do not think you were a troll though. Thank you for admitting that.

I agree. I think XP is the best so far. You may have compatibility
issues with software and devices that worked with 98, however.

sucks too.

That's the one thing that I hate, that pissed off many of us homebuilders.

I change my hardware frequently, and for MS to demand that I re-activate
at full price after "one-too-many" upgrades felt like punishment. I
have been a faithful and honest customer. I resent being treated like a
thief, simply because I upgrade frequently.
