Com Ports loosing connection

We have a scale linked up to Com port 1 and Com Port 3, and it appears that
every once in a while Com port 1 stops responding. Can Xp turn off this port?
How do I set it so that XP can not close the Com ports?

com1 and com3 are the same, like a com2 and a com4 would be. you might want
to uninstall com3 to solve your conflict. but if you actually have a device
using it, then you need to manually reset the irq configuration to resolve a
"conflict". if you access the device properties and go to the resources tab
there you can manually make a selection, from a number of them provided, that
is not conflicting. you can also get a lot of data on conflicts via
sysinfo32.exe via help and support or you can do a search to locate the
executable..

sorry, its not sysinfo32 (i'm still in the dark ages)

it is now msinfo32.exe and might be found at "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe"
