Color Quality

I am working on WinXP Pro.

When I open Control Panel--->Display & navigate to the 'Settings' tab,
the 'Color Quality' dropdown menu lists only 2 options - Medium (16
bit) & Highest (32 bit).

Are these two the only 2 options provided by WinXP Pro in the 'Color
Quality' dropdown?

The reason why I am asking this is because I feel the colors of the
icons, fonts etc. are a bit different than what they should be.

I am using the silver 'Color Scheme' (Control
Panel--->Display--->Appearance tab)

I believe that is due to the refresh rate that the monitor is set to. I
could be wrong.

But more importantly, why would you want to set the quality to a lower
level? If you do so the icons, fonts, etc. would display pixelated. Is that
what your going for?

Actually, I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 to create ASP.NET
applications where in I have set the default font color to white (on a
black background). But what I find is the text that should be white,
they sometimes change to light brown or light red or some other light
color on its own!!

I believe my monitor is not at fault because when I use Visual Web
Developer in Win2K Pro, I don't find this discrepancy. Moreover, I have
set ASP.NET keywords in VWD to bold but it does nol seem to get bold.
While using VWD in Win2K, bold & regular text can easily be
differentiated but, as already pointed out, in WinXP bold text
literally look like regular text.

This is another reason why I have asked this question.

Using Windows XP Home SP2, have the same two color options.
There were more options, I do not know when this changed.
I changed video cards, perhaps this changed the color options.
The color change on letters and numbers "may be" caused by " Clear Type".
If the color changes on certain letter combinations, ie - th - HF etc., I
believe this is a function of "Clear Type" to assist in viewing.
Do not know much about Clear Type, or if this is the problem.

The number of color quality options offered depends on several factors,
the most important being the capabilities of the computer's video
adapter and its drivers. Other factors include the capabilities of the
monitor and its drivers (if any), the chosen screen resolution, and the
chosen monitor refresh rate.

What specific video adapter do you have, and have you downloaded and
installed the most recent WinXP device drivers from the manufacturers
web site?


What specific monitor are you using? What are your resolution and
refresh rate set to? Are these within the monitor's acceptable
parameters (check its manual)?

Often has to do with your video card drivers.

Thanks all of you for your inputs.

When I open 'System' from the 'Control Panel' & then click the 'Device
Manager' button under the 'Hardware' tab, one of the child nodes under
the 'Other Devices' node is 'Video Controller (VGA Compatible)' which
is accompanied by a question mark (?) image.

When I right-click this child node & click 'Properties', 'Device
status' says 'The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28).
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver'.

Could this be the cause of my color intuition?
