Clicking on links and/or embedded docs in/out of slide show view.

In my presentation, I have both embedded documents, viewable by clicking on
the document's icon, and links to internet pages and other pages within the
presentation.
When I'm presenting, I can't click on the embedded documents - I have to
hit escape to get out of slide show view and into Normal view.
When I'm viewing the document, making modifications, etc, I have to go to
slide show view to click on the web or in-document links.

Is there a way to avoid switching back and forth?

If you are using PowerPoint 2002/XP, you can use trigger to do so. Click on
the embedded doc, Click Slide Show > Custom Animation.

Then, click add effect > Object actions > Open.
Right click on the effect now, and click timing.
Click Triggers > Start effect on click of.
Select the document and click OK.
