Clearing History Problems

Guest

I am having some problems with clearing my history. I have read previous
posts but none of the suggestions has helped. There are some websites that
will not be cleared after I have cleared the history, temp internet files,
cookies, etc. I have even tried to go into the reg editor to delete it there
but there is nothing except the default value which of course cannot be
deleted.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

To start with, be specific. "I am having some problems...I have read
previous posts but none of the suggestions has helped...There are some
websites that will not be cleared..." doesn't provide information that leads
to specific advice.

Despite all the "normal" ways to clear cache and history, with some websites
I noticed that when you begin to type into the address bar it automatically
comes up as a suggestion. I do not want to turn off auto form for the
address bar. I have to clear company computers of all internet history
before a new person uses the computer so that way I can monitor what is being
visited. Though the history is empty and the scroll down bar for the address
bar is blank, certain addresses, such as for the photo site flickr will still
be suggested. How can I get rid of this?

Is this more specific?

Actually I found an easy way to do this....

If you log onto the computer under another name, you have the ability to
erase another user's index.dat file. You cannot delete your own, but someone
else can!

(if you do not share your computer, simply go to start, log off, then when
the welcome screen comes on, hit ctrl+alt+delete, then in the the box type in
admin or administrator and hit enter. go to my computer, c drive, documents
and settings, then your username, and then local settings. You must be able
to view hidden files to see local settings. under local settings enter into
history and delete everything.)

I guess I discovered my own solution

Erasing index.dat is a hack that can do more damage than good.

If you're a system administrator I'm surprised you haven't found a deploy
tool that easily does what you want. (I'm not a sysadmin, so I can't help
there, I'm afraid.)

How on earth can erasing index.dat do any harm? That's the only way I
know of to get rid of certain kinds of problems. Of course, you don't
want to delete just one such file. What you actually want to delete is
the entire contents of History.IE5, including all subfolders.
