Cleaning up after an uninstall

Dave Rado

Hi all

Following an uninstall of a program via "Add/Remove Software" which failed,
I did it by deleting relevant files and registry entries manually. However
there are two leftover bits I can't work out how to do:

1) How can I get rid of the entry in the "Add/Remove Software" list?
(Clicking "Remove" gives an error message").
2) The program created new buttons on the IE context menu - how can I get
rid of those? (Searching the Registry for the text string of the context
menu buttons got no hits).

Regards

Dave

If you're feeling brave - search the registry for the name of the program
deleted and remove all entries.

Hi Jerry

I had already done that before my original post. It didn't help with the
Add/Remove Software list, or with the IE context menu.

Dave

Look for the program's name in this section of the
registry:HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall
If found, click on the name to highlight it, then press delete on the
keyboard. The change should be immediate and the program name should now be
gone from Add/Remove Programs.

For context menu items, search the registry for the exact phrasing that the
program has added and delete from the registry.

NOTE: Use caution when editing the registry. Exporting a key before
deleting will allow you to save a .REG file. Double click that .REG file to
add info back to the registry if the results from editing are not
desirable. Or create a restore point (using System Restore) to fall back
on. Restore points include a back up of the entire registry

If the program left behind an install.log, check it for what registry
changes were made. Log files created for this purpose are typically text
files and can be opened in Notepad. You could also check the tech support
pages of the application's web site for a document outlining manual removal
steps.

Well I don't know why my registry searches failed before, but giving me the
path to look in did the trick. Many thanks, Sharon!

Hi again Jerry

Seems I did something wrong when doing my searches before - no idea what,
but Sharon pointing me to the path to look in did
the trick.

Thanks and regards

Dave
